As of late, I have really begun to lose interest in sports. Aside from hockey and baseball, I don't really enjoy sports. I can watch the Eagles in football, but that is about it for other sports. I have been trying to figure out a reason why this is for a while now. The root of the problem is pretty obvious to me now. I only watch soccer and track and field now. Agreed. Ignorance, stupidity, arrogance, they all apply. They have absolute luxury jobs, yet feel like they should be treated better than everyone else. In a class, everyone was posed the question, "Who is your hero?" The amount of people who answered with an athlete sickened me, that athlete has likely never done ANYTHING for them, and to mankind as a whole, has contributed little. You're spot on, most of them need to learn a whole lot about life situations.

I've heard enough conversations in the cafeteria to make a pretty good judgement. Obviously we're all speaking in generalizations here, and there are people who defy that, but I stand by my judgement.

I don't know the exact kind of stupidity your talking about here, so I'll just add a few things. If it's academic, athletes have been statistically proven to have higher GPA's than non-athletes. And "Hearing a few conversations in the cafeteria" isn't enough ground to make a judgment on. I mean, for one thing, high school cafeteria's are loud as shit. My friends and I go outside to eat lunch, can't hear yourself think in the cafeteria. And you could've also misunderstood them, or caught them saying dumb things at the wrong time, something we're all guilty of. And also, LOL at their jobs being the absolute luxury ones. I mean, the perks that they get from them are, but the beating that they take can take years off of their lives. They put their bodies on the line all the time in one of the most dangerous lines of work you can..

Anyone can have school smarts, they're a limited measurement of some people intentions. Also, I've found, at least at our high school (I'm doing research for a student government issue), that student athletes are less likely to take the highest level courses available. Oh yes, how could I be so stupid as to make a judgement based on one overheard conversation. Wow, I'm such a dumbass. Seriously, that's an absolutely awful argument. The whole jock mentality is against intelligent discourse and discussion. I know "smart" jocks, who you can't carry a conversation with, because they only things they really know how to talk about are: sports, partying, and girls. I've played sports my whole life; I quit one of my favorite ones, largely because of this jock mentality. The stupid pranks and hazing, the inability to realize the insignificance of things, the better-than mentality. It's just pathetic. This is so completely incorrect.

If this is talking about high school I would think this is a reason. The reason I say this is you get a large cross section of kids who are into sports. Many smart and many dumb kids. If you compare them to non athletes, you get a similar cross section of kids. It makes no sense to think that the average high school athlete would have significantly higher grades than a non athlete. The only reason I could think of for a difference of any significance is if grades are fixed so kids can play. If you are talking about college, it's comparing apples to oranges. In a lot of schools, athletes get such special treatment it's not even funny.

The stupid pranks and hazing, the inability to realize the insignificance of things, the better-than mentality. It's just pathetic. This is so completely incorrect. Not going to take issue with your first thing, because you've actually researched the toughness of the courses.. You think I think you based that off of one conversation? Hell, I said a few in my statement. The better-than mentality is human nature. It's human nature to want to be better than another guy, and also human nature to brag about it. Some people can control themselves, but, hell, everyone brags and has those kinds of moments. Half of this thread is people who bash the better-than mentality of jocks doing the same thing, acting like they are so much better than jocks. I mean, you sound like you want to tar and feather jocksfor goddamn sakes. I mean, we are freaking teenagers, for the most part. There is only 3 things teenage dudes know about: sports, partying, and girls. Should we treat nerds who treat others as though they are below them in inteligence standing the same way we treat jocks? And, no that is not incorrect. Do you know the physical beating that takes place in professional sports? Hell, even in non-professional sports? By the time I'm done playing sports, I'll probably have a lot of surgeries, thanks to sports. Hell, by bones f***ing ache and crack whenever I walk. Athletes probably take years off of their life with each hit. Hell, you cannot tell me that running full speed into a guy that weighs in upwards of 250 pounds is not going to cause physical harm. Good God, with the way some people think of jocks in this thread and on this site, you would think that they kill kittens or shoot little old ladies trying to cross the street. I mean, one of the main criticisms you guys come up with is the better-than mentality, but you guys consider yourselves better than them from what I've read. I haven't been able to have much rational thought all weekend because of my dog being put to sleep, so take this for what you want.

I think the jock is being put on a pedestal. (Jesus I have been referencing 40 Year Old Virgin way to much).
The one thing I do want to point out is the beating the single mom takes working two jobs for many years to support her children because the deadbeat father walked out. I would rather take a beating for millions of dollars then ever having to live that life. Not only that, if the beating is that bad, athletes always have the option to leave the sport.

I agree with that, but still, while they are on the job and actually playing, the beating they take on a physical level is unmatched.

Not going to take issue with your first thing, because you've actually researched the toughness of the courses.. Even without my research, Bama's statements hold true as well, even up here where high school sports aren't such a big deal. Oh, a few, my bad. I consider myself to be a pretty tolerant guy. What I am intolerant of, is people who get special treatment, who believe they're of higher value than someone else, and who treat others with disdain, especially those who often won't argue for themselves. I don't think I'm "better" than any jock, I think jock's need to get rid of their belief that they are, and for that, I criticize them. So if that makes me believe I'm better than someone, because they are arrogant and egotistical, then perhaps I'm at fault, but I think that's something worth being at fault for. There is more than three things teenage dudes know about. Another simply incorrect statement from you. I frown on superiority complexes in general. Hell, the nerd complex gets them bullied by the jock complex. Neither are better than the other. Yes, it is incorrect. It is not as dangerous serving in the military. It is not as dangerous as working around dangerous chemicals. There are so many more jobs that are incredibly more dangerous than playing a fucking sport. That's all it is, just a game. You wear some pads, have some rules, and you run into eachother. Good for you, oh you have such a dangerous life. Think about how stupid your statement is, and then tell me that being a professional athlete is seriously one of the most dangerous jobs you can have. I already addressed this, none of us are putting ourselves up on a pedestal, just stating that others should be taken off of theirs. That is entirely unrelated to this discussion.

I agree with that, but still, while they are on the job and actually playing, the beating they take on a physical level is unmatched. It is not unmatched, this is so blatantly wrong. They get the best medical treatment available, and have enough money to afford anything they need medically. There is a calculated risk in their jobs, and they have the best safety equipment to protect them. They are multi-million dollar investments, there is serious money to be lost if they are hurt. You sound like the kind of person who would've agreed with Kellen Winslow Jr. when he compared himself to a soldier.

It's pointless arguing with you Keeper, you won't change your opinion in any way whatsoever, and consider everyone else wrong.

You're damn right I'm not changing my opinion on this, because being a professional athlete simply is not the most dangerous job out there, not even close. I can listen to opinions and respect them on other things, but this is a simple fact, that you can't seem to comprehend, because you believe your superstar athletes are real warriors out there. The fact is their profession, while physical, is no where near as dangerous as so many others.

You keep trying to put damn words in my mouth Keeper. I never said they were real warriors for goddamn sake, get that through your skull. I said that "The beating they take on a physical level is unmatched". Granted, at the time, I wasn't really thinking about the military when I made that statement. But stop trying to put words in my mouth.
"Not anywhere near as dangerous as others"? Are you serious? You put your head one inch too far on a tackle, you lower your head just an inch too far on one side trying to break a tackle, and you end up having someone help you use the bathroom for the rest of your life, and can't feel your damn dick. Granted, the military and others are more dangerous, but athletes face a helluva lot of danger on the field, something you haven't shown much regards towards.

YOU ARE FULL OF F****** BULL SHIT. And you call me f****** ignorant. YOU'RE THE SAME DAMN THING FOR SAYING WHAT YOU'VE BEEN SAYING IN THE THREAD! It's a thing called f******* eligibility. Do grades get fixed? Yes. No one has denied that. But do you wanna know who gets the worst grades in the school? The f****** emo kids who sit home all day and play their f******* video games. By saying all this, you're acting like you are on a f****** pedestal.
