Bama has gone VERY light on the rules here, all he asked was you keep away from one word, and yet you prove that you cannot listen to a simple restriction. Your argument is no more compelling just because you use "tough" words.

I go to the best high school in a state where athletics really is not important. Our athletic program is prided in the way they enforce limitations on student-athletes, to keep their behavior on track. Even with all of that in place, I know it goes on, all the time. There aren't going to be stats that prove it, because if there were, then we'd have a scandal. But anyone remotely aware in high school can notice when those things occur, and others in this thread have spoken similar of the college level. Now maybe you reside in the perfect area, where none of this happens, and if that's so, wonderful, enjoy utopia. But you can talk to a great deal of aware students across the country, and most all will acknowledge that it occurs in some form.

Your third paragraph isn't even a logical argument, it is simply ignorant. I'm as competitive as they come, and intensely dedicated to my sport, but that doesn't result in me behaving in this "jock" fashion.

I hate the "emo" clique too (though I have a feeling you're trying to imply that I'm a member of it), it is disgusting to see people self-mutilating for attention and over worthless shit when they come from middle-class families in suburban areas. If this thread was about that, I would be stating the same thing.

What has been stated is, there is a jock mentality, that tends to come off like a complete ignorant asshole. Now, you may think that's a perfectly fine way to live life, and that's great for you. Some of us believe that people in general should mature and conduct themselves like reasonable people. It's something that won't happen, seeing as their personality tends to get them laid in high school and give them plenty of attention, but there is no wrong in pointing out the clear faults in it.

I think what needs to be pointed out, getting to the topic at hand after Keeper thrashing everyone, is that there is a huge difference between "athlete" and "jock". Athlete are genuine, honest, hard-working, smart people who happen to play sports. For instance Keeper or myself.

Jocks on the other hand are self-absorbed, egotistical crybabys who constantly complain about "how much pressure their under" when their taking borderline retard classes that I could get an A in when I was in Junior High.

Its not Jocks that are under more pressure than average its the athletes the hard-workers who dedicate themselves not to sports, girls (or, like, Freak boys ), and loving themselves but achieving a balance between having fun and playing well in sports and doing well in their classes.

What the hell? I haven't asked much, but I have asked people not to use the word "fuck." I'm going to actually have to start enforcing this, because obviously people don't respect my requests.

Oh and you have no argument here, you are so defensive about this it isn't even funny. Some of these statements hitting close to home?

Oh and cooljay you are right about the difference between athlete and jock. Just needed to say it, because I have been using the term "athlete" throughout this topic. Mainly because my only point of contention is the idea that athletes do get special treatment.

I have NOTHING against athletes. I'm one myself, and there's a decent chance it could factor in to my ability to get into college. I practice every day, and dedicate a hell of a lot of time into becoming the best I can be. My team is my other family. This is not about me hating athletes.

This discussion started as Freak voicing an opinion about the typical "jock" mentality, one that I believe is a well-found criticism, and many other posters seemed to be in agreement. However, from the start, you were immediately on the defensive. It is no secret that Sean Taylor's death clearly received more attention than it should have - the same can be said for Anna Nicole Smith's death. You then stated that sports are the biggest part of society, something I think is not true, and even if it is true, isn't justification for the topic being discussed.

Well, considering I am grouped with the jocks, shouldn't I be on the defensive? If there was a similar discussion on atheists, wouldn't you be on the defensive as well? (Not meant to insult at all)

I made a remark about stupidity, which you immediately jumped on, and then defended what I meant when I said it. Instead of that getting debated, you started stating points that simply are not true, and so the discussion had degenerated as such. You've been proven wrong on several accounts, yet cling to this belief that you are correct, when it simply isn't the reality. You have attacked me for putting words in your mouth, yet have done the same to me.

So, my posts about athletes having higher GPA's than non-athletes wasn't true? I guess those studies I found that back that up must be false, as well.

The facts are simple:
- Athletes receive special treatment in schools.
- Athletes are not under any "more" pressure than other students. Different pressures, yes, but all students face pressures to do well in school, and the argument that student athletes are smarter because of these pressures is simply based in falsehood

Oh, really? Would like you to take that second argument to the professors and coaches and others that have studied that and put a budget on that study?

The initial discussion was about jocks. I still think a fair deal of them are assholes, who when confronted about why they behave in their manner, dish out backwards logic and make the accuser's argument even more compelling. That's something I certainly stand by.

Some people are just like that. They won't change, and they see maybe one or two upperclassmen do it, and they cling to that like a liferaft.. Those are the jocks that don't go anywhere after HS, and make up maybe 5% at most of the athlete population. So, do you want to judge the millions of athletes around the country based on the actions of 5% of them? (I'm just making up the 5% as a stat, I dunno if it's true, would be impossible to figure out anyway)
