While in history class the other day, we began talking of monetary reparations. Since I am bored, I figured let's see the opinion on here over reparations.
Do you think monetary reparations should be paid out to descendants of African slaves?

No because they did not personally suffer from slavery... just from racism

There should be, but it would be an entire nightmare to organize.
We need to apologize to the Native Americans first.

Correctness is in the eye of the beholder, Clayton. Arguing makes a forum, like it or not, you have to accept it as fact. Go ahead and disagree if you so please, but don't hate on the argument just because people are going to argue.
About the subject at hand, if we gave reparations to the Japanese-Americans held in internment camps during World War II (we did, by the way) we should give reparations to the descendants to the victims of slavery. Will we? Of course not. Should we? Yes.

I say no because if you didn't have to slave and were born into this world as a FREE man, why should you get paid?

I figure I should throw in my two cents. See, I feel something should be done, but I don't know money is the best way to go about it. I have no idea what the best solution would be, but money would raise problems
You cannot find the correct amount. Some people would complain out of greed, which I hate to say but realize is true. The thing is though, can you put a monetary value on the dehumanization of a race of people? I don't think it can be done.

Now, it's been like 3 or 4 years since I been to an American History class but...Didn't the Europeans brings slaves over? The constitution was ratified sometime in 1788, I believe. So really, the U.S government inherited slavery. Yes?

The South isn't in favor of Reparations, the North is, blah blah blah.
It's a complete double standard that African-Americans haven't received reparations, but there is simply no possible way to do this in any sort of fashion, and you will never see a U.S. Congress that will take it on.

Slavery cast an image on Africans that they were less than whites. I could understand not having to deal with it if this image still wasn't a problem, but it is. Slavery played a huge part in racism we currently see towards African-Americans in this country today. I feel we need someway to formally apologize to all of those who have suffered from slavery, both directly and indirectly.

Well, I don't think money should be used. I mean, not to a specific individual at least. That will just cause many more problems (as it already has).

No ...... there are forms of slavery that incorporate every race throughout the world. It's ridiculous for our current government to pay DESCENDANTS of the people who suffered. They aren't suffering now ... they aren't picking cotton with the threat of a lynching or hanging looming over their head. I have a problem when people are now being released from prison after spending 10-20 years behind bars after being wrongly accused only to find themselves with absolutely nothing once they get out. Why aren't they reimbursed for all that time lost ... that's more of a problem than DESCENDANTS of people who suffered over a century ago. I have a problem when people who aren't currently paying taxes appear to be in line for a $300 gift from the government labeled as a tax rebate. How can you get a tax rebate when you don't pay taxes? How about you count that as your f@#kin reperation?
