I am thinking of starting up a classic album discussion thread to rec stuff like this. I like classic albums. I briefly entertained a classic albums tournament for followup for us snobs.

It's tough to do, as if they're selected as classics, they probably shouldn't be ranked over each other. But I've got a handful of albums that should be heard by everyone, PM me if interested in my list. They're not as obvious choices, but are critically important nonetheless.

Here we go, 32 albums, limited to one per artist. Trying to make this as fairly spread as possible, but no guarentees.
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Willy and the Poor Boys Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska The Who - My Generation Johnny Cash - At Folsom Prison Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks Godspeed You! Black Emperor - F#A#(Infinity) The Clash - London Calling Elvis Costello - This Years Model The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds The Beatles - White Album David Bowie - Low Weezer - Pinkerton John Coltrane - A Love Supreme Sam Cooke - Portrait of a Legend Queen - A Night at the Opera Panda Bear - Person Pitch Tom Waits - Rain Dogs Michael Jackson - Thriller Kraftwerk - Trans-Europe Express Radiohead - Kid A Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back Joy Division - Closer The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead Prince - Purple Rain Neutral Milk Hotel - Into the Aeroplane Over the Sea Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon Nick Drake - Pink Moon The National - Boxer Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation My Bloody Valentine - Loveless Led Zeppelin - IV Arcade Fire - Funeral
I think these are pretty well spread out, there are only 4 releases from after 2000 (Arcade Fire, Radiohead, Panda Bear, The National), all of which will stand the test of time.

Night at the Opera has never been my favorite Queen album, although it's their best, too much British music hall for me.

I don't love it, but the album has pretty much defined that whole grand rock opera idea.
For genres I think I have at least one release from: soul, post-rock, punk, post-punk, jazz, folk, folk rock, indie rock, new wave, electronica, hip-hop, pop, pop rock, experimental rock, shoegaze, alternative rock, rock.

The National. I've not heard anything about the band but downloaded that CD Keepsie mentioned. Really impressed so far...

Such a great band, listening to Boxer out in my lawn at 2:00 AM is one of my best memories of last summer. Brilliantly melancholy, uniquely American, and the musicianship, specifically the drumming, is just incredible.
