sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/bc.fbn.seahawks.a.m.ap/The article goes on to say that the university's last resort would be to take the Seahawks to court: "What we hope is that the normal course of action will work, and that they'll choose to recognize our ownership of the trademark," [A&M's chief marketing officer Steve Moore] said. Make of this what you will...

I'm going to claim legal rights to the word "it", so whenever someone says that word, I get $1 million.
Seriously, shouldn't Texas A&M be more worried about something other than monikers for their student section. Perhaps they should focus on, you know, actually trying to edcuate kids?

TAMU has taken other schools and teams to court over this in the past.... it's nothing new. Wouldn't have been a big deal this time except for the big deal of Allen raising the flag before last weeks game.
Remember, there is not a school built so much on tradition anywhere in the US more so than that of TAMU....

Slogans equate to money and popularity, which is what America is all about. Sep, I don't think you understand the concept of free speech.

I...*chokes*...agree with sep.
I'm not saying it's a dumb business move - it's genius - but it shouldn't be allowed. You can't own a word.

Three-Peat was another term copyrighted, I beieve by Pat Riley. USC students tried to get away with Three-Pete (for Pete Carroll) but the courts said they were too similar.
And yes, sep you are retarded. You can say what you want, but you can't advertise it. It's sounds stupid, but like bskt said, the Donald made a ton off of that. You can't have people stealing it, and with it, taking his money away. Not that he needs any more of it...

There just words, no one should make money off words. Its retarded. Again, you're wrong. These "words" are entire marketing campaigns. Without marketing, businesses wouldn't be what they are. You're suggesting we eliminate the right to reserve phrases, which would basically allow Burger King to make commercials saying "we love to see you smile". It's competition. You can't screw with big business.

I dunno, copyrighting words seems to make people a lot of money (i.e. Riley). But for TAMU to get angry about the 12th man is both alright in a season and stupid in another.
It's alright because it's their tradition, something they had back when it was a power in football. It's stupid now considering what the Aggies have gone through in the past four seasons. Maybe back in 02' when they upset OU the 12th Man was relevant, but it isn't now.

I'm going to copyright the copyright symbol and see what happens. I'll be a billionaire. And what's TAMU going to do, sue Paul Allen? The guy's got more money than TAMU could ever dream of having.

They don't want to take down the Seahawks, just get them to stop using thier "copyrighted" title for the fans. Makes perfect sense to me.

I have a question, and it's pretty simple:
The Seahawks have used this slogan since 1982. Why is it coming up now?

...because the slogan is being used on a national stage. Before, nobody cared. I'd never heard of the Seahawks' 12th Man tradition until their playoff run this year.

So you don't think that Texas A&M had a clue that the Seahawks were 'ripping off' their slogan prior to this season?
It seems fishy, but maybe that's just me.

I think they can find a better name. Why would you want to be named after a group of people that get drunk then stand all game.

Well, I have been reading the replies, and I was just going to stay out of it, but oh well.
I really like the whole 12 man thing with Seattle. I loved the whole flag thing and all that. Now on the other side, Texas A&M started it so, I guess it does remain with them. I mean you dont see people going around these days saying "I have a dream".
Anyways, I dont want to see the 12 thing leave Seattle, so hopefully they can come up with another slogan and keep that tight flag.

Texas A&M doesn't deserve the 12th Man dubbing either. I've never been to their stadium before, but I can guess that there are bigger stadiums out there taht produce more noise and are more like a 12th man (ie. Qwest Field, Beaver Stadium, Heinz Field)
