Is now a category four. Further strengthening is likely. New Orleans is still a possible target. Again. (Should auto update)

why people live below sea level in a hurricane zone and then wonder why they keep getting hit hard with hurricanes is something i will never understand

I'm keeping close touch with my family right now, because Baton Rouge is in the line of fire here. I think NOLA is probably alright, but man this is going to be bad. It's almost a 5 right now. Man I wish I was home to help out, I hate being this far away.

At least they're taking action this time and not just standing in the way.

If Gustav stays on it's current projected path, the eye will pass within 30 miles of my house...to the west. I'm lucky to be in Oxford right now, but my family are directly in harms way. Kinda worried about them, because they are staying at the house. Got trees and such in the backyard and they'll probably get knocked down. Plus my dad's not exactly in shape to clean up after a storm alone. I really wish I was at home to help.

We have been getting some heavy rain from this thing. Tampa hasnt had strong rain (although it rained last nite at the USF game for a bit) but the wind gust have been crazy. Has to be about 35-45 MPH gust right now....not to mention the skys are gray. Oh and if NOLA Mayor Ray Naggin is callin this the "storm of the century", then I am really nervous about it hitting the gulf coast. If it does Katrina like damage, New Orleans may become a flooded ghost town.

New Orleans is in a lot better position this time. A storm hitting to the west of them is actually better because the water will be forced out of Pontchatrain instead of into it. This thing is going to be bad for my state.

Ray Nagin is a fear mongerer. He also said it was 900 miles wide, which is simply a lie. New Orleans is in a lot better position this time. A storm hitting to the west of them is actually better because the water will be forced out of Pontchatrain instead of into it. This thing is going to be bad for my state. Actually, moving to the west would be worse, because it forces all that water up into the Mississippi delta and floods the west bank. Whether it comes close enough to have such an effect remains to be seen.

The track, like Jeff Masters pointed out, looks like Betsy did.

For the interested parties following this, Gustav is strengthening as it nears landfall tomorrow. This is starting to look like a very bad situation for southeast Louisiana.

Again, for those interested:
A weaker but still extremely powerful hurricane is making landfall. Reports of the Industrial Canal levee in New Orleans being overtopped. Areas to the west of New Orleans will be getting the eye wall shortly.
