There is talk that the NCAA is considering moving into Canada, and reportedly several schools including British Columbia, Simon Fraser, Alberta (oh yeah), Toronto, and some college in Windsor are interested. The reason for the canadian teams to want out of the CIS (canadian inter-university sport) is because of severe scholarship rescritions. Only tution can be paid for by a scholarship which excludes books, room and board, etc so they lose alot of good player to the ncaa. Plus I think only like 10-15 scholarships can be given out each year.
Before you say "there's no way thats gonna happen cause it says in the NCAA charter that.... blah, blah, blah", the NCAA has had meetings in order to explore the possibilities of changing the charter to allow for expansion to Canada.
Personally I love this idea, although I am not sure what it would mean about my chances of moving on to the UofA after the next year or two because I really dont want to play the american game as well there will obviously be more players interested in playing for the Golden Bears so my chances may go down.
Obviously none of the teams would move into Div-1 or even Div-II or III. Most likely the would start in the NAIA. This could also be the case for all other sports (watch out for those hockey playing golden bears). The universities listed were some only ones that could realistically move into the NCAA based on population (cause obviously u need alot of dough to run a university).
The only thing is I really hope that Toronto is not allowed to have a football team. Seriously they are the most futile team in the history of football. They have not won a game since October 13, 2001 a streak of 46 games and 5 and a half seasons!!!!!! It is redonkulus that they still have a team.
Anyway what are ur guys' thoughts on this proposed expansion?
