Amazing athlete and a team leader, I hate to think what could have been if he doesn't break his leg. We lost to LSU in overtime in 2005...with Prothro in the game we probably pull that game out. Then we have a much better shot against Auburn, and could possibly ended up SEC Champs.
Protrho holds a special place in the Bama nation's hear though, for the amazing catches and spark he gave the team. The man ran the wishbone as a QB against Auburn in 04, played some running back, and trashed a talented UF defense in 05. I was also there for his famous catch, in person, something I will not forget.
I hate to see a guy to cut his career short with such a horrific injury, it's just depressing. Prothro will go down as a Bama legend though, even without doing as much as Palmer did some 12-14 years before. He's a legend at Bama, and I'm still sad we'll never see him on the field again.

I knew the break was bad, but you'd think in todays world with all the technological advances, after two years someone would be fully healed.
What a shame, cause like Bama said he as an amazing athlete and team leader.

I also feel for the guy, and honestly if there would be anybody to blame for it, it would be Shula. Bama was up 31-3 in the fourth quarter, the game was over. Why in the hell are you throwing it deep to your star receiver still? Doesn't matter what team I was rooting for I still didn't want to see the guy get hurt and thought he was a very exciting player.

We were in the redzone I think, but I actually agree with you. That was the moment that Shula lost his job IMO. With Prothro, we don't have our offense go that stagnant and have fans at the end of the year unhappy with the way the offense played. Losing Closner during Moo State also really hurt Shula, as we lost to LSU and Auburn before getting a lucky score against Texas Tech to let the defense cruise. It set up Shula on shakier ground than most would after a ten win season, and well after we lost to Moo State the writing was on the wall. We should have probably subbed him out (he complained of being hurt after the first punt return, same leg around the same spot of the break) and let DJ Hall, Keith Brown, and Matt Caddell finish off the game. I guess hindsight is 20/20 though...

I gag every time I see that close-up on his leg. Absolutely disgusting. You had to love the things this guy could do on the field though. A lot of receivers don't have the athleticism (or the balls) to make those kinds of catches...
