Well, the University of South Alabama has finally been approved a D-1 football team. I think they will make their first appearance in the Sun-Belt starting the 2009 season...
Too bad I want be here much longer to enjoy it.

Fun story, I actually signed some petition about that when I was in town earlier this year. I'm not sure how much support there is for USA though. The Mobile area is still very much Alabama/Auburn with LSU mixed in for good measure. I'm just not sure there's going to be a ton of support and South is going to end up looking like UAB when it comes to football.
Still, I have a new favorite team in the Sun Belt.

Yea, I actually have a feeling your going to see a lot of Baldwin County players end up at South. Mainly South is going to get whats left over. But it will be cool to see them play. The club football team is actually pretty good so we'll see.

The club football team is actually pretty good so we'll see. Your right about that. It's probably going to be a team of guys who weren't quite good enough to go to a major school from the Baldwin and Mobile country areas. Also the Mississippi Coast should also send some kids to South Alabama. There's a lot of talent in the area, the problem is picking through the leftovers Alabama, Auburn, LSU, FSU, ect are going to pick up. Getting some of the better players from Daphne, Foley, McGill, Murphy, Ocean Springs, George Co., St. Paul's, UMS-Wright, Williamson, ect is not a bad thing though...

I think Grand Valley State in Grand Rapids, Michigan needs to be added as D-1. They have unbelievable fan support because they are a constant winner and have a lot more students than some MAC schools.

Is it just me or does this dilute the talent field and reduce the quality of Division I athletics, especially at the smaller schools?

South Alabama is not a small school. The campus is fairly large, student body is pretty big. The fan support is already crazy for the team. Stadium with nice size already available. It's a good move for South, and I think they will bring some competition to the Sun Belt in a few years.

Well obviously thats their fault for not fighting hard enough to be moved up. South Alabama fought really hard along with the community to get their team in D-1, and they got it done. Also, we already have a D-1 basketball team that is decent too. So if App. St. wanted it, they could get it too...

I meant smaller as not being one of the "Big Six."

I believe he is hoping USA will use Ladd-Peebles Stadium, home to the Senior Bowl and the GMAC bowl. Correct?
