CARMEL, Ind. (AP) -- The Rating Percentage Index (RPI) has been used by the NCAA since 1981 to supplement the selection of at-large teams and the seeding of all teams for the NCAA Tournament. This list is an independent duplication of the RPI without input from the NCAA, which does not release the RPI to the public. It is derived from three component factors: Div. I winning percentage (25)%, schedule strength (50)%; and opponent's schedule strength (25)%. Games against non-Division I opponents are not used in calculating the RPI.

the RPI is used in all college athletics and is the big factor in selection days to fill out the brackets (especially in bball and ice hockey). The EXACT formula to the RPI is not supposed to be known, so when you see it on websites, they are only estimates and guesses to the formulas. The formula DB posted is right, but there are tweaks and bonuses to it such as road victories, etc. For example, the RPI listing for college ice hockey on uscho.com gives the user the opportunity to interact with the RPI and see how it changes if you guess what the values are for the bonuses.
Essentially, this is what seperates you from being the bubble team that makes it into the bracket and the bubble team that doesn't come playoff time. RPI's are not a good indication until conference play is a few weeks old usually.

The RPI seems like a poor man's version of the BCS....and vice versa too...depends on how you look at it.

The RPI seems like a poor man's version of the BCS....and vice versa too...depends on how you look at it. I guess I like the RPI better if that determines the rankings, because if yoiu get ripped off of one place, it's not the end of the word, especially if you're a higher seed. The only way to get ripped is if you miss out completely.
