It's a bad time to be a head coach in NCAA men's basketball right now. First Quin, then Eddie Sutton, now Mike Davis. But I digress.
I have no idea what Indiana's remaining schedule is (probably tough, since it's the Big 10), but it wouldn't surprise me if they still make the NCAA's, especially if they make a run in the Big 10 Tournament. But this loss to Penn St. definitely has to hurt them.

Mike Davis will remain on as head coach through the end of the season... effectively ending any hopes of the Hoosiers still making the tournament.
Ok, well, probably not really. If we finish at 8-8 (which could be a stretch), with a modest run int he BTT, there's a chance. But, we still have to play Illinois and Michigan on the road, and Michigan State at home. I'll go out on a limb and put those down as losses, which would put us, at best, at 7-9 to end the year.
Oh well. Bring on Thad Matta.

Thad Matta and Steve Alford won't be leaving their schools. Why would they leave jobs at which they have their teams at the top of the conference while Indiana is losing to the likes of Penn State? Sorry Hoosier fans, but if your school wanted Matta or Alford, they would've hired them when they had the chance.

Actually, I highly doubt that...

Matta has repeatedly stated that Indiana is his dream job, and there is reportedly an out clause for IU in his contract. I'm not saying it will happen, but to completely discount it as a possibility wouldn't be right. Also... Steve Alford has reportedly already said he would take the job, if he is the only candidate. If he is asked to go through a process and interview for the position, along with other candidates, he will not accept the position.

I am going to give you the guy who gets the job. Jim Crews. Write it down. Doubt it... Greenspan has already taken some hits after not firing Davis last year. The last thing he will do is hire someone just cuz he liked them at another job. Personally, I think Mike Montgomery gets the job. He was great at Stanford, and he's got to realize he can't cut it in the NBA. edit: Just heard Andy Katz on ESPN radio talking about the IU job search. He said that several big-name, big-time coaches are expressing interest through their representatives. One name mentioned was Marquette's Tom Crean.

Believe me Hoosier, Greenspan's retarded enough to take Crews. The IU students might lynch him, but if Army wins one more game, Greenspan will hire Crews. He's gotta be a good coach if he can win with Army.

I actually love Greenspan. He's made two outstanding hires for our football and women's basketball teams. I think the hostility and venom resulting from the Davis situation will really open his eyes, because the IU students aren't the only ones he will be heraing from if he makes a hire that we feel is less than worthy of our program. The trustees are very fickle. Not to mention, one of these days, Mark Cuban may decide he actually cares about IU... and Kevin Kline has already chimed in on the matter. I'm sure the Simon bros. (owners of the Pacers and Simon malls) would have something to say, as well, since they're building a new academic building on campus.

Davis called it "a great day for Indiana basketball" or something to that effect.
Even he realizes he sucks.

I could definitely see Alford sliding over to Bloomington to coach at his alma mater. But as much as I hate Iowa, he's got something good going on there, although this might be his last good year, with Brunner, Haluska, and Horner all graduating...I think they are seniors. Not for sure.

You're in Bloomington, right Hoosier? Up here in Indy, we're hearing Mark Few (Gonzaga) being thrown around quite a bit. I even heard *gasp* Tubby Smith from someone, but I doubt there's any truth to that (at least, I hope there's not any truth to it).

I don't see any way Mark Few leaves Gonzaga. He's a West Coast guy, and his family loves it out there. I know Mike Montgomery is considered a candidate, and many believe that if he gets the job, that he will bring with him Keith Smart as an assistant, who will be groomed as his replacement. I would personally love that. Winthrop's Greg Marshall has also been tossed around.
Oh, and by the way... apparently, Mke Davis has been contacted by Missouri. Uh oh.

Davis is better off as someone's assistant, where he gets to do all the recruiting. Knock him all you want as a coach, but he's a good recruiter. True, he couldn't get Josh McRoberts or Greg Oden, but he was able to get guys like Bracey Wright. He'd probably have better luck at Missouri where he's not expected to get every state recruit to sign with him like at Indiana.

He's an average recruiter. Aside from one year, he basically refused to recruit the state of Indiana. Our tradition wasn't built with guys from Alabama and Florida, it was built on the play of guys from Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, the midwest. If Davis would have recruited Indiana better, maybe he would still be here, but he was too stuborrn, and alienated a lot of Indiana HS coaches.
That said, I don't think he ends up as an assistant anywhere. I think he gets looks as a head coach, main because he will most likely bring DJ White and Robert Vaden with him. (Hate to see 'em go, but the ends justify the means.)
Also, interestingly enough, Matta never ruled out the possibility of coaching at IU in an interview in today's Columbus Dispatch. He said he would definitely answer any inquiries from Indiana.
