sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=2366357After 24 years, he finally calls it quits. Glad to see a great coach can leave on his own terms like Chaney did. He left such an impact, on basketball, Temple, and Philadelphia.

Fan of mine simply because he reminded me so much of Bill Cosby. Glad to see him go out on like a true great.
Now if Cincy only did that to Bob Huggins...

One bad thing he did and he's lost all his respect? Come on sep and think for once. Despite this, he's one of the game's true greats, and if you can't respect him and his greatness then you have serious, serious issues.

Wow like he is the only coach that ever sent in a kid to lay down some hard fouls. Sorry it happens. Atleast he owned up to what he did. He is a true great simply for the fact what he did for the University and for the kids he brung into the program. He never had the luxury like some schools to choose amongst the vast All-Americans in High School yet he fielded a team of kids that were off the streets to whom he felt would benefit from an education. Yea he had his mishaps with his anger, Calipari doesn't hold any ill-will for his desire to win and they are even good friends to this day. Unlike some other coaches he never had a cupcake non-conference schedule, and would take his team to play anyone and most of the times his teams were very competitive. I can respect a coach like that any day. He did enough with his players education than many other schools do now, and he made an impact far beyond the basketball court for the fans, the alumni and his players. Sad someone harps cause he has goons, god do me favor do some research on the whole NCAA basketball not just the major conferences.

Not to mention how much he cared about everyone of his players. How many coaches would hold practice at 6 in the morning to ensure his players were not out doing stupid stuff the night before?

Chaney is simply one of the best coaches of all time. Most people don't understand how hard it is to do what he did in the A10. You're not in the ACC or Big East where you get all the top recruits. He's in a crappy conference that has no named teams. He went in an 8 year stretch to lead his team to 5 elite eights. 5 in 8 years! No non-major conferences do that. He had a streak of 13 consecutive NCAA tournaments.
So what if he did send in a goon? It was really stupid, but should we all think of each other lower because he did one bad thing? I was listening to the radio today, and people compared him to OJ Simpson because he threatened to kill someone. Haven't you ever said to your brother or friend I'm going to kill you? Chaney just had cameras on him. The Philly media is anti-John Chaney and it's a shame. His 500 wins are overshadowed by one of his recent "controversial" comments. Just ask his players. They'll tell you he's one helluva coach and a person...

I loved the way he ended his press conference. "Excuse me while I disappear."
