ST. LOUIS -- Roy Williams, who led North Carolina to a 23-8 record despite losing all five starters from the 2005 national championship team, was chosen coach of the year by the United States Basketball Writers Association on Tuesday.
Tyler Hansbrough, one of Williams' prized recruits, was the pick for freshman of the year. The group will announce its player of the year March 31.
Williams rebuilt a team that lost its top seven scorers from a year ago. The Tar Heels started two freshmen and two walk-ons. Their season ended Sunday with a loss to George Mason in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The 6-foot-9 Hansbrough averaged 18.9 points and 7.8 rebounds. He was the first North Carolina freshman to lead the team in both categories.

good choice. I thought Williams deserved this award, because if you lose your top 7 scorers from last year, it's gonna be hard for you the next season, but he didn't experience much of a let-down.
