This might sound kind of rude but to really get to know a program, try things out and keep mental notes about it while playing with it. Also go to Google and find tutorials on Fireworks by simply searching for 'Fireworks Tutorials' or 'Basics of Fireworks'. This should get your started on what to do and how to use it. From there, help about specific things about graphics that you need help with; we can further improve your skills.

On cutouts just zoom in on what your cutting out. Don't resize just zoom. Then when you nuse the eraser tool near where it says size it should say edge. Make the edge like 30 that way it will give the edge of the player a smooth effect instead of it looking like you cut it with a scissor.
