Team Introduces Coaching Staff Toronto, Ontario. -- The Toronto Ice, of the newly formed Global Football League (GFL), to formally release to the media, their owner and coaching staff for the upcoming 2004 campaign. Many reporters were on hand as owner Daniel Ziff (a diehard football fan), introduced one by one his handpicked coaching staff.
Ziff introduced his head coach, Mike Ditka. It is reported Ziff had to pay close to $500,000 to ESPN in order to bring Ditka away from the anaylst jon he occupated on 'ESPN Primetime'. Ditka's base salary will pay him close to $6-Million per season. "It's a groundbreaking day in GFL history, and a proud day in the Toronto organization," said Ziff. "I'm glad Mike has accepted my offer to lead the Ice to greatness, I don't know a better man for the job." Ditka coached the Chicago Bears to a Superbowl in 1986, as they defeated the New England Patriots convincly, 46-10. Ziff hopes Ditka's winning tradition will be carried on here in Canada. Next to be introduced, was former NFL great, Marcus Allen, who will be the Ice's offensive coordinator.
"Growing up as a kid, Marcus was my favorite player, running over tacklers, his dazzling speed, he was just the full package. Despite him not having any coaching experience, he is surrounded by a great personnel here in Toronto, and will fit in well." said Ziff.
Ziff would then introduce his defensive coordinator, Mike Singletary, arguably one of the greatest linebackers to ever set foot on an NFL field.
"This coaching staff will have good chemistry, they all know the game well, and heck, Mike coached Mike during the eighties" Ziff said laughing.
Desmond Howard, the MVP of Superbowl XXXI, and former Heisman winner, was the last to be introduced. His coaching role will be the Special Teams coach. Despite the lack of coaching ackground, Howard will no doubt bring the knowledge of the game to the Ice roster. He will be a vital part to their kick and punt return strategies.
