www.sptimes.com/2006/06/04/Sports/Faceoff.shtmlA few weeks ago I replied to myy local newspaper, St. Petersburg Times, on a "Faceoff" question of the week. The question was who has been the greatest coach in Buccaneer history Tony Dungy or Jon Gruden? I chose Dungy, and if you chose to, my short response is in the link on the website. I'd just like to know your take on the question.... It's about the only time i'll every write about sports in a newspaper...

It was pretty much Dungy's team that won the Super Bowl... Gruden just found a way to finally get them over the hump. But because I like Dungy, I'd choose him as the better coach...

Thats a very tough question. Being a Bucs fan I don't think I could pick one. Dungy set it all up for Gruden really. If I had to pick I'd go with Dungy.

Thanks for the deep explanation, ASM....
It's Dungy, because like N2S said, he built the Super Bowl Champs. Without him, Gruden never even has the chance to get there. Since the team Dungy assembled was dismantled, Guden has stuggled to keep his head above water.
And also, from Wikipedia:

Monte Kiffen deserves a lot of credit for the defense...

The day after Gruden and the Bucs won the super bowl he called Dungy thanking him. Don't know if most of you know that or not.

It was not Kiffin who created that defense contrary to popular , Tony Dungy gave the Cover 2 to Kiffin and let Kiffin teach it. Somehow, Kiffin has become the father of Cover 2, but not quite.

Yeah, Tony Dungy should have got a ring from that Super Bowl. It is definetly Dungy.

Branching away from these 2, John McKay was the most entertaining. Never saw him Coach in person (thank you NFL films). But I say Tony Dungy. Gruden is a great coach but was given an already gifted team. He was more of a disciplinarian then Dungy and kept the team running smoothly. But the team won that championship via defense, the Cover 2 defense started by Dungy.

Way to ruin a thread ASM. I must say, Gruden is a good coach though. I remember his Philly days.

i gotta go with Dungy on this one
now, Gruden won us our only Super Bowl, but he won it with Dungy's boys, and Dungy was able to take us pretty far with Shaun f-ing King, a guy playing third string on some team now, so there's no telling how we could have done with a solid QB on our team under Dungy
but, i must say i feel bad for Tony, cuz he has produced two quality championship teams now, and still no ring
Gruden is starting to re-tool us though, but as of now it's Dungy
