Well, at least they'll get a second chance at the number one pick in a few years.

Marty said something to the effect that Wade coached the defense, and Cam coached the offense, and he just "facilitated things." So, I guess they figured without those two he was of no use.

Why would you fire Marty after the rest of the league finds their coachs. That's a slap in the face to a Hall of Fame coach who put your team in position to win a title this year.
I pray that Marty finds a head coaching job somewhere and the Chargers suck for the rest of time.
I hate stupid crap like this..
It actually gets me upset

Marty didn't win. It's that simple. He has lost his two coordinators as well. I was shocked that they didn't do this earlier. Don't get me wrong, Marty can coach a team..........to the playoffs, but at the end of the day, that will never do.
The stupid thing is the Chargers themselves are now in a tough position to find a coach.

I think they'll be just fine. Remember guys like Ron Rivera, Mike Singletary, Norv Turner are still in the market of coaches.

I think so too Cerrano. Losing Wade I think put it over the top, Marty ball couldn't win in the playoffs and I think the organization felt it needed a new coach, seeing as they have the talent.

The one interesting thing will be how LT performs in a new offense.

I dont think its fair to say Marty cant win in the playoffs when it has nothing to do with a coach. I dont care what he says to motivate a team in the locker room, the players have the play.
This year... they lost because Merriman and Phillips both got injured in the 4th allowing Brady to come back.
It's not that he cant win the Big Game... he just hasnt had as much luck or help by his players...
The Chargers were horrible when he took them over and now they have a high powerd offense, the best defense in the league and a 14-2 record.
Very similar to the Buccaneers firing of Tony Dungy, just worse...

Very similar to the Buccaneers firing of Tony Dungy, just worse... There's one major reason this is so different from that. Most of the coordinators were still in place in TB. SD lost both Cam Cameron and Wade Phillips, along with 2 (I think that is the correct number) position coaches. Obviously they have the talent, but SD is bringing in a whole new system, while Jon Gruden just rode Dungy's work.

Maybe it's because I had him as my head coach in Madden with the Chargers after this season, and we went 15-1.

The idea that all the cordinator left Marty and that the Chargers want an entire new system is bogus and your watching the wrong show. The reason the Chargers dumped Marty is because they dont link him. They have never gotten along, they both agree with that much, and this coaching staff things finaly gave them a reason to fire him.
Trust me... It's not because they want a new system. They would have fired him a long time ago. Also, they wouldnt have allowed all their coaches to interview if something wasnt going on under everyones noses.
I'm not saying Dungy and Marty have similar situations, I am saying the firing is very similar. Not getting along in the clubhouse goes a long way. Even if your 14-2.
Look at Joe Girardi with the Marlins in baseball haha

Good Point Freak
A Coachs job is to install a system, have everyone beleive in that system, and prepare his team against their opponents.
He installed a system that took a horrible team to 14-2, the entire roster loved Marty Shottenheimer and beleived, and he prepared them for New England no better than anyone can.
San Diego played New England better than anyone did in the playoffs(including Indianapolis) and lost because of a late comeback b Mr.Comeback while key players were out. That happens to anyone.
Marty Shottenheimer arrived with no Offense, no Defense and Ladanian Tomlinson.....
The Chargers now are a 14-2 team that killed the Patriots and lost. Had they won, they could have handled the Colts and played in the Superbowl.
Your right... if a coach does nothing in the playoffs he does nothing in the regular season, but he did what the Chargers asked from him on his job decription. The rest was up to his players and fate alone. It didnt work out.
You cant intellegently explain him being fired, because he cant win in the playoffs. There is no argument.
You dont go 14-2 in the season, your Runningback breaks a record, your young QB shines, your defense is absolutely amazing and become the superbowl favorite to get canned in the Off-season after every team found their new Head Coach.
The Chargers didnt even give him a chance to pursue anything else... I hope he signs with someone sooner or later and beats the Chargers in the playoffs to get to the Superbowl and win it.
That'd be nice

They're not a horrible team without him... obviously they think they can bring in somebody with a new system and find a way to make it work. Marty's had a long time to find a way for "Marty Ball" to work in the playoffs, and it just didn't pan out. If management thought that Marty couldn't win this team a Super Bowl with his system, then they did the right thing. I'm not saying the timing of everything was right, but the guy has coached an awful long time, and you can't honestly take the whole thing out on the players every time he's had a chance and not gotten thorugh...

That'd be nice A.J. Smith is a meddler. That's all there is to it. He wanted Marty to coach his players differently, and they had disagreements on how the team should be coached. I mean, a GM should be involved in the team's affairs, but they shouldn't get involved in coaching philosophy. If Smith wants to dispute that, he should coach. A GM is supposed to handle personnel decisions. That said, 5-13 in the playoffs isn't a good record, especially considering he's taken very good teams to the playoffs before this year. This year, in my opinion, without Tomlinson, the Chargers are horrible. They have an improving, but average offensive line, no receivers, and a tight end that faced constant double teams. And a quarterback who I think is very overrated in Philip Rivers. Teams will figure him out next year, and I don't think he'll have the season he did this year.

I cant stand how the Chargers can be a great team and Marty Shottenheimer be a great coach, and they lose the the Patriots and all of a sudden they wernt that good and hes not that good.
Like I said... 5 and 13 in the playoffs means nothing. Look at the coachs in the Hall of Fame with playoff records and you would be suprised. Shottenheimer made things happen in San Diego and got ran out personaly.
All there is to it
