They lost against the Greek and will play for bronze yet again.
The Greeks had no nba players on their team.
Man whats up with the USA ?

Sofoklis Schortsianitis will be in the NBA for the Clippers within two years and Vassilis Spanoulis will be a rookie with the Rockets next year, so they DO have NBA-ready players.

I doubt ego's were the problem here.... They shot poorly because they wernt in season form. There still in sitting on a coach off-season form.
If you think there wern't egos in 92 when Birg, Magic, Drexler, Jordan, Pippen, Ewiing, Hardaway and Olajauan were sharing time you are sorly mistaken.
Times have changed, and since the '92 dream team the international basketball game has become very popular thus making it very good. It's called competition, and we lost in a one game serious. If we played Greece 5 times, we would have one 3 times if not four.

But yet, the media doesn't seem to get this, and that we should dominate everyone. Not the case anymore.

I agree with Bearcat here. After the "dreamteam" we had a run of domination for about 5 years, then the rest of the world caught up. We aren't used to playing World-Style basketball, which is more of a team game, so wisky your kind of right too. We have the talent, but today we simply got beat by a better TEAM with a better gameplan.

International rules support team basketball. The US does not play team basketball, nor does it have any outside shooters.

Well I thought this year would be different... with Coach K and the kind of formation they had.
Guess not...

Bruce Bowen and then either Ray Allen/Michael Redd/or even Kobe
Tell me why the combo of Bowen and one of the three jump-shooting guards didn't play for USA? Defense way atrocious and there was nobody on that roster with a consistent jumper. You can say you're fielding a team that's team-first and such, but without those two components, you don't even win basketball at the NBA level. Frankly, we were better off sending a roster of AI, Kobe, KG, etc. out there then what we had...

What we need is a pure outside shooter that can block shots. I hate him, but Bowen would be a good pick. Rip Hamilton, Ray Allen, we don't need Kobe. Kobe is just talent, we have talent, if we wanna win - its time to look at strategy. We made so many strides with Coach K this year, I think we are very close and could have a chance in Beijing if we add 2 guards and I say we can drop Brad Miller and I'm not sure who else. You don't win games inside as much as you do in the NBA.
EDIT: And McGahee, "Dreamteams" don't work as well, you can't win based on pure talent at the international level anymore. Although I agree Garnett would be a nice addition

I say play with the team that won the NBA title that year. Not a bad idea, use the same coach... could work.

Well, in that case, if you want to scrap that idea and take the best players, at least take some role players, such as a Bruce Bowen, or a Ben Wallace.
You need to have a mix of defensive stoppers, shooters, big men, and distributors of the ball, not just a bunch of guys who score 25+ per.

You can't take the team that wins the NBA Championship, since nowadays, half of them are European...
Guys like Shane Battier aren't the top NBA players, nor are they well-rounded. So why did we put them on the team?

My starting five would be... Dwyane Wade Lebron James Ben Wallace Tim Duncan Kobe Bryant
You've got some big men in Wallace and Duncan and then you've also got some shooters, but all of them can drive. The US should try to drive to the basket every time for a layup, they have the athletes to do it.

Kobe was supposed to be one the team but the surgery on his knee put him out of it until the start of the NBA season at the least.

So why did we put them on the team? I believe Battier is from Duke and so Coach K felt the need to have him? And maybe he had played well and proved whatever he needed to to be on the team. We need a Dream Team badly but everyone's worried about their money more than anything else...

Duncan isn't playing internationally any more since he had some issues with the officiating back in Athens...
I could put together a better roster without using any of the players the US used and get a better team...
PG- Chauncey Billups SG- Michael Redd SF- Bruce Bown PF- Kevin Garnett C- Ben Wallace
Bench: G- Ray Allen G- Mike Bibby G- Andre Iguodala F- Shawn Marion F- Amare Stoudemire F- Ron Artest C- Marcus Camby C- Alonzo Mourning
This is a little harder without being able to use Dwight Howard or Chris Paul, both of whom I'd definitley want on the roster (Paul would probably even start) but with this lineup you get guys like Ray Allen and Michael Redd who can hit a jumper, two playmakers in Chauncey Billups and Mike Bibby, who both can also light it up if needed (although in this situation they wouldn't). Mourning and Camby are both high-percentage shooters and get plenty of blocks, and of course Ben Wallace is great defensively. Iguodala, Artest, and Bruce Bowen are great perimeter defenders, and Amare, Marion, and Garnett will rack up a ton of boards in addition to the centers.
But the team we sent out didn't have this. As great as Melo played, he shouldn't have been on that team. He doesn't have a consistent jumper, and there are plenty of other guys in the league that could have gotten the same amount of points and filled out the stat sheet a little better. I know Battier went to Duke, but I forgot that Duke produced such poor NBA players, and that was the best Coach K could bring in. Bottom line, Battier does not deserve to represent this country.

I'm gonna jump back to the "NBA Champs should play" idea, while it's good, A. with all the international players it might not work, someone brought this up earlier.
And B. I don't think the coaches would really like that too much. You really think Pat Riley would be OK with Shaq and his deteriorating body playing game action all summer? Just another chance for an aging veteran to get hurt or wear down.
