www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/bask...-home-headlinesBilly Donovan expected to become Orlando Magic's next coach Brian Schmitz and Tim Povtak | Sentinel Staff Writers Posted May 31, 2007, 3:01 PM EDT Billy Donovan is expected to become the next coach of the Orlando Magic after he was presented with a substantial contract offer, officials with the NBA team told the Orlando Sentinel. Donovan, 42, is coming off back-to-back NCAA titles with the Florida Gators. He was in the midst of negotiations for a contract extension at Florida when the offer arrived. Donovan would be replacing Brian Hill, who was fired last week after back-to-back losing seasons. Two league sources had told the Sentinel on Tuesday that the Magic had been in contact with Donovan's agent, Lonnie Cooper. When asked about the job Wednesday, though, Donovan said he had not spoken with the Magic. The University of Florida had been making plans to announce Donovan's contract extension next week. On Wednesday night, though, the Magic made a firm offer to Donovan. Donovan would become the eighth head coach of the franchise. The Gators beat Ohio State this spring in the national championship game for their second title in a row, but he was losing his top six players. Donovan repeatedly has said that the NBA "intrigued him,'' but also said he was happy with the college game. Donovan has no NBA coaching experience, but he played briefly with the New York Knicks for coach Rick Pitino. Before coming to the Gators, he was the head coach at Marshall University.

They gave him an offer, as they do every coach. I wouldn't get too excited.

Unless he likes babysitting, he shouldn't do it. Then again, Orlando's not full of egos like most NBA teams are.

i think he's going to do well as a coach. He doesnt really have to worry about family issues considering his family in Gainesville is 90 miles away from Orlando. He has the pieces in place to create a young, successful team and he may even build them up to be like his Florida championship squad. just look...
Tauren Green=Jameer Nelson Lee Humphrey= JJ Redick Corey Brewer= No one really but Trevor Ariza comes closest Joakim Noah=No one Al Horford= Dwight Howard
a few moves here and there plus a good draft will have the magic moving in the right direction. I do feel sorry for Florida's incoming recruiting class though.

Well, Taurean Green + Lee Humphrey + Corey Brewer + Joakim Noah + Al Horford = one crappy NBA team.

With 2 2nd round picks, if they don't trade up, Taurean Green looks like he'll wind up on the Magic, I'd predict...

Well, Taurean Green + Lee Humphrey + Corey Brewer + Joakim Noah + Al Horford = one crappy NBA team. But you must admit, D-Howard is the best low post player in the game under 24 years old. He has a franchise player to build around. Not many first time NBA coaches can say that. Or if they can, their star player isn't anywhere near Dwight's level.

In a battle of young post players, I'd go with Emeka Okafor over Howard.

In a battle of young post players, I'd go with Emeka Okafor over Howard. Howard has played and started every game in his career. Okafor has missed 67 games combined the past two seasons. Okafor's last two games when playing against Dwight Howard: 9 PPG, 7.5 RPG, 43% FG, 0.5 APG, 2 BPG Howard against Okafor: 16 PPG, 12 RPG, 71% FG, 1.5 APG, 3.5 BPG Change your mind?

It's called an opinion, and I am allowed to have one. I'd take Okafor over Howard, every single chance I would get. Maybe it's because I'm a Bobcats fan.
The reason that the statistics are better for Howard is because he has a lot more talent around him than Emeka does. The people around you tend to have an impact on your statistics, none moreso than big men.

Yeah because Howard boxing Okafor out on the glass is because guys like Raymond Felton and Gerald Wallace aren't good enough... Speaking of Felton and Wallace, if excluding Okafor and Howard, they BOTH average more points per game than anyone on the Magic. Howard's "help" is the miracle 35 year old boy Hill who nobody thought would be playing, 40% shooter Hedo Turkoglu, and the still developing Jameer Nelson. But if you want to say that Orlando substantially has a better team, by all means go ahead. Just find something else to back up the point that every time Howard is matched up against Okafor, he has the potential to shoot over 70% as he has...

Dude, why don't you just drop it. I made a statement of my opinion, not a fact, and you started dragging statistics into it.
I would take Okafor over Howard, any day of the week. Nothing you say or do will make me change my mind.
