I will contend against this statement. NBA Finals ratings are going even further down this year no matter who makes the finals. do you even WATCH basketball. If 2 BIG, historic teams like the Lakers and Celts make it to the finals ratings would be hella crazy. Everyone knew LeBron and the Cavs would get swept last year so why watch? Not to mention the Spurs made it to that point yet again. No offense but the Spurs being in the finals would hurt the ratings. Spurs being in the Finals hurting ratings is true. Outside of Texas, many people believe the Spurs are boring to watch. I'm not taking away from how good they are, just their style is a yawner. Last year is the first year I didn't watch a single game of the Finals ever. Because of like you said, everybody knew Lebron was gonna put in work but still get swept.

I agree the Spurs kill the ratings - but when people ask why they won't watch, they say boring basketball - when asked why they don't watch the NBA in general - it's selfish team play, no defense, etc. Seems hypocritical, no? That's my point.
My side - I don't give a shit about the ratings. I care if my team wins. Some of the best games I remember being at have been low scoring tight games. The 90-84 win vs the Rockets was awesome early this year. Game 5 of the 05 finals was awesome - mid 90's in OT. Game 7 was like 81-75... also a great game. At the same time, I've grown up in a city where defense has been preached since 1994-ish and so the fans appreciate it. a 81-79 finals game is just as exciting as a 130-120 game to an NBA fan, but not a casual fan.
The Suns and Mavs sure play exciting basketball - I'll make sure to check out their trophy cases the next time I make the trip there for a road game.

And just an addition.... a Spurs/Celtics finals would get huge ratings - Garnett/Duncan for it all. Boston's big 3 vs ours....
It's no Lakers/Celtics, but it's still big.
