Harold Reynolds explained on either SC or BBTN that the arm swing was his sign for "no contact" and that the fist was his "strikeout" sign. Confusing since that fist sign is more commonly used as the sign for an out, but like I said, the Angels should've known that it was his strikeout sign by the 9th inning.
It's not like the Angels were sure they were going to win that game, either...who's not to say that if Pierzynski is called out that the White Sox wouldn't win it in extra innings? If the Angels had the lead at the time I could see making a fuss about it, but it was only a tie game.

95% of the blame here goes to the Angels catcher. If you actually look at the replay from the side angle you see that he trapped the ball and it did touch the ground. The only confusing thing here is that the umpires signal for strike three (which he had done the WHOLE GAME) is practically the same as an out. However the argument is stupid because the catcher couldnt see the umpire signal anyway, he was facing the other direction. In order for it to be an out, both a visual AND verbal signal have to be given. As a good catcher, Pierzynski knew when he didnt here the out call that he could run, and as a third stringer the Angels catcher had no idea what was going on.
