Anyone watching? USA is up 1-0 off a Derek Lee home run. Damon did get a triple the last inning, but was left stranded.

Chipper Jones with a solo shot to make it 2-0 US.
I still hate the guy.

How is that too bad? He is representing is homeland. Andruw's case is a little different because he was born in Curacao, which is a principality of the Netherlands. But I'm sorry, these players should be playing for where they were born in my opinion. My grandmother was Polish, but I in no way associate myself with that. I was born and raised in America. Also, the only way teams like Italy, the Netherlands, etc. (small baseball teams) will promote growth in their country is by having actual Italians play rather than imported players such as Piazza. I don't know, I just think all of this is a little ridiculous. Just my two cents.

But think about it...is Mike Piazza not "Italian"? My grandparents are from Finland...and I have a ton of Finn in me. The WBC's goal is to promote the world's best players representing their countries. Mike Piazza has Italian heritage...and in some way (personally, not sure how) he IS related to Italy. I'm not saying if you eat spaghetti...you're Italian. Piazza has Italian blood in him...and I'm sure he'd much rather be playing for Italy than America...because there's a certain pride in playing for your country...and your country doesn't necessarily mean the land mass where you came out of your mother's womb. And by the way...yeah, just a plug for Canada...man did we own you guys yesterday.

The 3 US catchers are more athletic than Piazza. He wouldn't play.

Rumor is Balco Bonds is willing to play in the second round if Buck Martinez gives him a call and asks him to play. The U.S. desperately needs offensive power, but I doubt they're that desperate.

Sure, he's Italian by decent, but it is America that has shaped him. You've got some Finn in you, but it is Canada that has shaped you. Perhaps I just wasn't brought up in a similar manner. But I always viewed America as my one and only country. I recognize that this is not true for some of my ancestors, but it is my (if I was playing) that I am representing, not them.

I don't blame Piazza for playing for Italy. Your heritage is very important to the person you are. Not only that, but the WBC is to promote the sport of baseball. If you have all the guys like him playing on the US, how many people from other countries would watch?
