Myself as a Yankee fan, I'm not happy about this...just not. I woulda preferred to see the team that has been playing be the one to finish the season. Abreu's gonna suck like everyone we pick up same with Lidle, because every pitcher we get forgets how to pitch when they come to New York it seems..ugh.

He had a great nine years for us, but baseball is baseball. We do have David Delluci and Shane Victorina who will fill in his spot pretty well. It is obvious the Phillies are loading up on talent for the future. We traded three established major leaguers for five minor leagues in their low 20's. I won't whine too much since we are hitting the crap out of the ball in this Florida series, but it won't be long until we'll miss Abreu.

When you toss aside the fact that the Phillies traded an all-star caliber outfielder with 65 RBIs (not to mention one of our best players ever) and a reliable pitcher that has gone 4-0 in his last four starts for three average single-A prospects and a mediocre bullpen pitcher from AAA, it's a pretty good trade.
I mean, let's just all forget about CJ Henry's 25-error, sub .250 batting season and make him our third baseman of the future. Sure, he's a SS, but he's just so good defensively that his skills can be used anywhere.

Well Sheffield is gone after this season, that's the only for sure thing about this trade.

I like the trade for the Phil's, they have no chance of making the playoffs this year, so why not off-load some of your older players to get some young ones who should flouish in a few years. Wait... they're 5 games out of the Wildcard in the beginning of August... so they have NO chance of making the playoffs. It's not like they're chasing an amazing team either... this is the Reds for crying out loud. ASM please stop invading MLB threads. Every time you do you post the mose idiotic things. Stick to what you know...

Well Sheffield is gone after this season, that's the only for sure thing about this trade. I don't know if that is 100%. I think it depends on how much Shefield wants to stay with the team. I was watching Baseball Tonight last night and John Kruk did make a point in saying Shefield might be able to stay with the team if he would move to first so Giambi could be a full time DH. I doubt it would happen, but I would not rule it out.

Move him to third base, I'm sure he'd fare better than A-Rod.

I am glad they picked them both up. Abreu had two hits last night and Lidle pitched a great game. I agree with Loki though, we seem to play better with guys like Andy Phillips and Melky Cabrera in the lineup.
Now with Abreu, Sheffield bought a first basemen mitt and might spend time there with Craig Wilson and Giambi. All I know is the lineup is going to have at least one star player sitting every game unless Wilson is strictly a backup like John Flaherty.
Even if they didn't get Abreu and just Lidle, I would be happy. We don't need a hitter, we need a solid pitcher. Why we went after Sidney Ponson is beyond me. I hate that he is going to the bullpen to make it suck even more.
O well, at least we are a ahead of the Red Sox. They say we have too much money but they have it too so they can suck it.
Another AL East title, AGAIN!!
Go Yanks!

are you saying that Corie Lidle is going to be the pitcher they are missing? Lidle will struggle in the AL, the NL power is no where near what there is in the AL, I expect Lidle to get pounded by AL hitting Im not saying that he'll do it everytime, but did he struggle yesterday?............

Thank you for bringing those numbers up papelbon. He also put those up against the Jays, a very good hitting team in my opinion.
Lidle is a solid pitcher and will turn out better than a guy like Sidney Ponson or Shawn Chacon. I'm not saying he is as good as Mussina or Johnson, but he and Bobby Abreu were a steal for only 4 minor leaguers.
The Tigers also got a steal in Sean Casey.

You know it's sad when you get more for Rheal Cormier than you do for Bobby Abreu and Corey Lidle...
