Jered Weaver tied Fernando Valenzuela's 1981 rookie record today. Do you think he'll get his ninth win in his ninth start?
And I think I can now say this safely.. Jered is WAY better than Jeff

This kid deserves rookie of the year in AL, not Papelbon. This kid pitches 5-6+ innings a game and is undefeated, and Papelbon comes in for one.
I am sick of hearing the talk about Papelbon. Jered Weaver deserves it.

Papelbon had rookie of the year in the bag at the all star break, but he's turned from god into just another top-of-the-line closer in the league. He does not deserve it by any means now, compared to the dominance of Liriano and Weaver, and is just slightly ahead of Verlander, who's had a great season as well.
I thought that Weaver had no shot at rookie of the year because he just didn't have as much innings as Liriano did, seeing how Weaver started later and then was sent to the minors. But with Liriano shelved for now, he definitely could take it. In Weaver's 11 starts and Liriano's first 11, they each (arguably) only had one non-quality start. Liriano's had only one since then, so Weaver would have to continue to dominate to match that.
Liriano walks more batters (at the rate they're going anyways), has a higher WHIP (although they both have phenomenal WHIPs that are relatively close anyways), and has a higher ERA (which is still close as well). The only real advantage that is eye-popping for either guy is Liriano's Ks, which are stunning. Liriano's K/9 is a bit above 9 (as a starter anyways) while Weaver's is about 8. Another thing I realized was that Liriano also pitches more innings, which makes him more valuable than Weaver, who's been pitching roughly no more than 6 IP per start, not because of performance, but pitch counts.
Right now, Liriano is ahead by a smidge. But if Weaver continues to dominate and Liriano maybe slips up one more time, I wouldn't be surprised if they were co-ROYs...
