Because I hate baseball and the way they handle business with allowing the players to be in complete control, I'm hoping A-Rod can make it into the $300M range at least. Nothing would be funnier than having the best player in the league (and potentially the best of all time) destroying the game entirely. Johan Santana isn't that old either is he? Is there anything stopping him from 9 figures this off-season? Clearly he's worth so much more than Barry Zito is. I'm hoping that more money is spent on free agents this year than every other year combined. Sure that will be tough, but I'm sure Boston and New York and a few other teams can at least make this easily the most expensive off-season ever... I don't really see the Yankees or Red Sox going on a big spending spree this offseason but agree that this offseason will be ridiculous for some teams financially. And I wonder how San Fran feels about their big, bad ace now. He sucks and I could've told them that. Thank God the Yankees didn't get him like I was praying they wouldn't.

Johan is only 28 I believe. And he'll easily command a $20 mil per type of deal at the very least. Minnesota should've locked him up loooooooong ago.

The $180M they'll be giving Santana doesn't count as a huge spending spree? Not to mention replacement 3rd basemen don't come that cheap...

I haven't heard anything about this but if they do it I'll be mad. He's not all that great and NO player is worth that much money. I was already right about Barry Zito so please, go somewhere else Johan.

He's not all that great and NO player is worth that much money. Except Derek Jeter and the $190M that the Boss gave him.

Johan will have earned the contract he gets (to an extent) much more than the one Zito got himself. Johan is clearly the best left-handed pitcher in the game, if not the best overall. 2 Cy youngs in 3 years is all he needs to mention.

Opts Out, per Sportscenter. I ran upstairs to tell my stepbrother who was sleeping and a Yankee fan. THen I did a little dance on the Yankee Empire's grave.

And thus baseball is shot in the face once again. He will again receive another huge, overblown contract.

They did quite alright before they got him, suddenly we couldn't get passed the ALDS with him after 2004 when we choked with him.

the question is: From whom? Anaheim, San Francisco, Chicago (Cubs), Boston..I mean, they no longer have a soul. There will be a buyer for the best player in baseball.

No, that's the Mattingly Curse in action. To be fair, the Yankees teams were pretty bad throughout the 80's...like Steinbrenner took a friggin' break or something.
