Turns out Madden is not the only EA Game with a cover jinx. The NHL series seems to have one too.

First SI, now EA

EA Sports announced last week that Vincent Lecavalier of the Lightning will grace the cover of its "NHL 2006" video game. Good luck, Vinny. Consider the fate of your predecessors while serving as cover boys:
"NHL 99," Eric Lindros: Misses the Flyers' first-round loss to Toronto because of a collapsed lung. Then misses much of the 1999-2000 season because of concussions.
"NHL 2000," Chris Pronger: Blues are the best team in the regular season, but the Sharks upset them in the first round as Dave Lowry and others get under his skin.
"NHL 2001," Owen Nolan: Misses the first two weeks recovering from abdominal surgery. Later the league suspends him 11 games for dropping Grant Marshall with a forearm to the head.
"NHL 2002," Mario Lemieux: Helps Canada win Olympic gold but injuries limit him to 24 games with the Penguins, who finish last in the Atlantic Division.
"NHL 2003," Jarome Iginla: His points drop from 96 the previous season to 67, while his rating dives from plus-27 to minus-10.
"NHL 2004," Dany Heatley: Two weeks before the season, Heatley loses control of his Ferrari and slams into a wall. Teammate/passenger Dan Snyder dies several days later.
"NHL 2005," Markus Naslund: There's the lockout, of course, but Naslund opens himself up to ridicule by ripping Steve Moore, the victim of Todd Bertuzzi's sneak attack. Regarding Moore's lawsuit, Naslund said: "This is just a guy who's trying to hit a home run. Someone who wasn't good enough to play."
Maclean's, the national news magazine of Canada, calls Naslund "pitiless" for his comments.
Hey, EA, any chance of getting Gary Bettman on the cover?
