He was one of the best to ever play the game. I still thought he could have went out there and played another season. Thoughts?

This is shortlived. I don't think he'll be in retirement for long. He'll come back.

It's about time...
While yes, he was one of the best to play the game, and he could have played a few more years...he still was sub par these last few years. When I saw he retired on ESPN, all I could think was "It's about time"

although his ability as a player has been declining since his brief stint in Van-city (Vancouver if you didn't know) his ability to lead a team never faltered. I know what your gonna say, how could he be a leader if the Rangers always with pretty good players? Well the players the had there did not want to be led, especially the arrogant Jaromir Jagr and Eric "Captain Concussion" Lindros. Mess will forever be one the greatest leaders in the history of the game.
I think his crowning achievement was when he overcame the adversity of losing the Great One and one a Cup in his second year as captain of the Oilers. That and "the guarantee" before Game 6 of the Eastern Finals against Jersey, where he guaranteed a Game 6 win when facing elimanationa and then scored a third period hat trick and an assist to win the game and then went on to win the Rangers first Cup in 54 years.
Goodbye Mess, we will miss you.

He was a great leader but, i just dont think he can be said to be "one of the Best Players in the NHL" he was getting old and it was just time for him to throw in the towel, he did the right thing, he would be a really good coach tho.....

I disagree with the statement that he was a leader all the way through. He was a leader until his second stint in New York. His presence may have never swayed with the fans, but in the locker room, nobody cared. The team still slacked and did stupid things, and the dressing room was no more than a revolving door for more high priced babies. He was and is one of the greatest to ever play, but its about time.

As I said in the above post I thought pretty much all the players in the Rangers roster did want him to lead them as they were overpaid, underskilled, crybabies who thought they were too good. Mess could have lead that team into the playoffs if they had let him.
