The Bruins have dealt superstar captain Joe Thornton to the San Jose Sharks for defenseman Brad Stuart, winger Marco Sturm and center Wayne Primeau.
I think this deal is about even for right now. Thornton is a proven superstar who is still young and improving. The Sharks got some great young talent in Stuart and Sturm, who have just started coming into their own in the last few years, and a veteran role player in Primeau.
I say dead even for right now, but if Stuart and Sturm continue to get better and fufill their potential, the B's win this one.

As long as it's good for Thornton... he's on my fantasy team after all...

I think Boston loses on this trade. Sure, they get three very talented players, but Thornton was really starting to come into his own. He has the potential to be one of if not the best player in the league. Boston has been struggling, but that's mostly because of injuries to star players (especially Raycrfot).
I think San Jose loses, too. Those guys were the emotional leaders of that team. The Sharks better hope Owan Nolan signs with them, because if not, they are in big trouble.

Well, Boston was in desperate need of a shake up. Dont know if this was the right person to trade away to create that "shake up" however.

I'm not even interested in the Bruins now, two stupid trades this season.

I must admit I was a little surprised as well. Trading the cornerstone wasn't the answer. But Thornton isn't without his issues, so this isn't neccessarily a slam dunk for the sharks.

Bstn, this wasn't neccessarily a stupid trade. I know that Thornton was having problems with the franchise and it's not like they traded him away for nothing. They have a new, young #1 defenseman, a solid young scorer and a guy who can help out their 3rd and 4th lines. But if Thornton blows up, then yeah the B's will look stupid for dumping him.

I know it's not COMPLETELY stupid, but this is the second trade we've made this season. Thornton isn't just a great player, he gives the team a little boost of confidence. Last night they may of won 3-0 (gee, a shutout!), but I don't think Boston will even crease .500 again on the season.

I don't think the issue of them being .500 had that much to do with Thornton. There are other sources of offense but I think Boston's real issue was and will continue to be Andrew Raycroft's health and the performance of the defense. And I think Stuart and Primeau helped to address that. Boston obviously had some major issue with Thornton. You don't re-sign your franchise guy then trade him 20 games into the season for nothing.

Raycroft isn't the same goalie he was last season, Hannu Toivonen has been much better.

But you know the B's won't entrust their season to Toivonen, who isn't really proven on the NHL stage. And to say Raycroft isn't the same, you may as well say that about 90% of the league. I think most of the players are still getting acclimated. And regardless of whether or not he's the same goalie, he's still going to be the biggest impact maker on the B's, for better or for worse.

Raycroft has been flat out awful, though. 4-11 record and a .887 save percentage isn't what I want game in and game out.

He'll get better, at least I think so. He's a solid young goalie but I think team defense was lacking and it hurt him as well. But that all remains to be seen.
