So, I was reading a column a bit ago that brought up the 3-year anniversary of Todd Bertuzzi's on-ice mugging of Steve Moore. Basically, the column wanted to know why fighting was warranted at all and how guys like George Laraque basically shouldn't have jobs.
Frankly, I feel that fighting is essential to the NHL. You can only call so many penalties on dirty players. There are going to be head hunters and they need to be dealt with.
Now, I doubt many people will agree with this but hear me out. I think Todd Bertuzzi was right.....in a way. In essence, he was standing up for teammate Markus Naslund, whom was knocked out of a prior game by Moore with a clean hit. Now, how he went about sticking up for his teammate? Very, very, very dumb. Bertuzzi is so much bigger than Moore that he could've just challenged him to a straight up fight and still crushed him.
In the case of the most recent brawl, ottawa vs buffalo, i think Lindy Ruff did the right thing. His guy was hit with an obvious cheap shot and was injured. He sent his guys out there to send a message by basically dueling with the Sens. No one jumped on anyone's back, no one wound up and slashed the hell out of anyone, just guys settling their differences fairly.
So if a guy takes a cheap shot at your goalie and injuries him, you're supposed to just stand there? No, you're supposed to be a good teammate and beat the hell out of the guy who did it. No cheap shots, just a fair fight.
The game would see far more injuries because fighters would be replaced by cheap, head hunters who know that they may get suspended but as soon as they come back, they'll have a place in the lineup for just that purpose. The players need to police themselves, plain and simple.

I agree with everything you said
That's what is great about hockey. If there's a problem, you settle it on the ice...

True. Of course Bertuzzi had a right to somewhat even the score, but the manner he did it was wrong on so many levels, and it's just a shame that it brought so much bad publicity to the sport.
As you said, keep the cheapness out, and there's no problem...

I hate when people say Fighting does not belong in the sport. They don't understand how important it is. You can sway momentum with it, and protect the top players on your team. Fighting For Life.

Frankly, like I said, if fighting goes then at the very least, suspensions on illegal hits need to be so severe they won't happen twice. I'm talking like 10 games for a first offense , 40 for a second, season for a third. And the games should carry over. Also, if you're a known head hunter and you reach five suspensions for an illegal hit, you should be banned from playing in the NHL for life.

speaking of the bertuzzi incident, while I do not codone bertuzzi's actions, moore should also, at least in part, be to blame for what happened. He knew they were after him and if had just been a man turned around and dropped the flippers with bertuzzi the "incident" would not have happened and they would have left moore alone. But he decided to be a little bitch and run away so bertuzzi hit 'em. You can't blame Bertuzzi for hitting him, you can blame him for hurting him that way.

I don't remember exactly how the play turned out, but Moore looked like he was just following the play and got jumped. Plus, I can't exactly blame Steve for not wanting to fight. He was giving up 4-5 inches and like 30 pounds.

It happened like this: The game was out of reach and Bertuzii was looking for Moore. Bertuzzia chased Moore around the rink for some 10-15 seconds but couldn't get him to turn around and face him like a man. So bertuzzi struck him and it was really bad luck for Moore and bad jugdment by Bertuzzi and the other players when moore fell and the piled on top of him, which IMO is when he broke his neck.
Honestly I hate bertuzzi the guy sucks and he is a bully but he was ostrazised for an incident that wasn't completely his fault and for that I kinda fell bad for him, however him being a-hole does not help his cause.

Yeah the media was all over this and immediately used it to degrade hockey. Those interviews were kind of depressing. "It is what it is..." I'm glad the Canucks supported him, but he really needed a change of scenery ala Heatley after the car incident...

Just makes me sick to watch it. Moore wasn't running from him either, he was following the play up-ice. And so ****ing what if he did run? That gives Bertuzzi the right to mug him? As far as i'm concerned, Bertuzzi should have gotten a life long ban and Chris Simon should get this season + playoffs and next season + playoffs.

The more I look at it, the more it seems incidental that Bertuzzi fell on top of him. Maybe it's just my eyes this early in the morning, but it kinda looks like he wanted to get some more shots on the head first...

I think its your eyes. After the first punch, Moore was out, so falling on him just added to the injury. I don't think Bertuzzi lost balance at all. I think he thought of flopping on him after he started to go down.
