As most of you know, I play on a roller hockey team during the summer. Well, lately I've seen an increase in the faceoffs I have taken. The problem is I suck at them. I've been practicing but was wondering if there is a tip or something that can help me see more success in winning faceoffs.

I just go backhand and draw it back. I'm not a center so I don't get much practice but you can hit there stick forward and take the puck or put your ass in their grill and then kick the puck back.
I take faceoffs on the PK and sometimes in the D-zone at the ends of close games because i can tie it up and win it good most of the time.

I am going to have to try that hit their stick method. I can tie some guys up but there are some in the league that are just too damn shifty. I usually just try and send it back to my defensemen but I can never get that to happen. If I can wing it back in the offensive zone I have a great offensive-defenseman who can rip it great.

I'm not an expert, but when I take face offs, I usually just try to lift their stick and swing my hip towards them. If i'm doing what i'm supposed to, I should be able to just kick it back to a d-man. If I think I have quicker hands, i'll try the straight draw.

I played over 8 seasons as a center and actually went to camps just to learn from centers and my technic at draws is that I basically watch a refs hand from the point I enter the circle and never deviate from looking at anything else... as soon as his fingernails whiten thats when I begin to move and I usually win it back to my back hand and swipe under the opponents blade.... to go on my forehand (BTW im a Righty) I twist and turn my lower half of my body and kick with my right leg to the forehand player...

If you're going to be taking more face-offs, just attempting to tie them up won't work enough. Sniper has the right idea. Timing is everything.

I have a few weeks to get the techniques down before the playoffs. Hopefully then we get our true faceoffs guys back so I can stop doing them.

To update everyone, I tried some of the things mentioned in my game tonight. I won more faceoffs then before, still missed some crucial ones. Overall though, I did a lot better.

I've also found that the following works:
Me: Hey, look at that! Him: Wha...? Me: (sucker punch to throat)
Needless to say, i'm 100% on draws.

I would try that but I don't want to take the suspension. They have been cracking down on the violence. We lost one skater to suspension, another to chest pain, so five of us in the humidity sucked ass. We got up 4-0 and lost 6-4. We just couldn't produce after the first period.

Well perhaps i'm the only one blessed with the speed to not get caught. And chest pains? Do you play in an old man's league, perhaps?

Well our team rangers in age from 16 to 36. The league itself is as old as 39. What happened was the one 16 year old was away for the past few week and this was his first game back, in the humidity and what not. I think he just over exerted himself in the first period and by the time the second came around he was in major trouble.
