Did anyone else jump out of there chair when they say Campbell absolutely light up RJ Umberger. It was prob the best hit I have ever seen. That was the biggest suicide pass by that Flyers guy I have ever seen. I mean he pretty much served up Umberger on a silver platter. Here are the after-effects of that hit: Does anyone have a vid of this hit cause I havent been able to find one.

If you took pride in seeing someone do that then you need to go shove something where the sun doesn't shine.

Well OK, let me rephrase that. I don't mean it's the type of thing that you go to the penalty box, get a misconduct or anything. Was it necessary? I don't think so. The game was getting heated at that point and I think Campbell just got caught up in the moment.
</futile argument>

I don't care how physical a hockey game can get, you CANNOT just completely shred a guy to pieces like that in open ice, suicide pass or no suicide pass. There's a line you don't cross. Umberger could've suffered far worse than a mild concussion from that hit. Campbell should've had a little class and shown some sportsmanship.

I'm not starting anything personal - just playing devil's advocate.....
and when an Eagles LB, Ray Lewis, whoever lights up a tiny slot receiver on a slant across the middle...... it's ____?

It's different in a way. Acceptable? Probably not, but it's still different. Football players know that they're going to be hit hard on every play and brought to the ground. Different surface as well. You're comparing apples and oranges.
How about this ... would you rather hit your head on ice with a hockey helmet or hit it on ground with a football helmet?

That's the thing.... I don't see how it's different.... contact is just as expected/normal in both sports.... both are equally padded.... the football pads SLIGHTLY larger up top than hockey shoulder pads, but still equally padded essentially, both instances, slant in the middle and this play, a player gets caught in an area which is not really desirable by does it because that's the play of the game, a defender is sitting back and sees an opportunity to unleash and does so.....
You could even make the argument that the pass is away by the time of the hit, but say the wideout drops the pass and the LB doesn't know that/doesn't react to it - he still uncorks, perfectly fine, perfectly expected and there is no remorse..... i personally really don't see the difference.... I can see from the outside the assumption of a lack of physicality in hockey, but they're fairly equal in my option.....
The surfaces is a reasonable point now because of the transition to fieldturf all over in the NFL at least, but I can guarantee the Vet was probably harder than ice to hit - and in this case, the fall onto the ice had no impact on his injury, though I concede it could in other situations
and just to restate.... nothing personal, just stating my point and inquiring as to yours

Fine ... the hit itself's debatable. You have to admit, though, that the worst part of it was HSBC Arena's replaying of the clip about 5-6 times just to get the bloodlust going between Sabres fans. Especially when the player that was just hit is completely dazed on the ice with blood pouring out of his nose. Unacceptable if you ask me.
As a Philadelphia sports fan, I can tell you not even WE would do that.

True enough, I didn't see it live so I have no clue how the arena reacted to it, fans, replays, etc, I only caught it on... I guess sportscenter this morning, and I think I caught it during the Det/Edm game this afternoon - and it did not occur to me it was a philly player - I solely saw it as a hit without really paying attention to the jerseys, so I can see where you're coming from also

I caught the game and saw the hit live. I don't care whose side you were on...brutal call by the Buffalo arena staff to replay it over and over again.
Otherwise, clean hit...solid hockey. I'm sorry, we do it rough in Canada.

just wanted to add now the local sports guys are showing the hit a few times.....
pretty funny to hear them talk about it though, don't know how far the term has spread nationally, but these are the same guys who invented the term "slobberknocker" from hits from local football..... calling this hit the first offical ever slobberknocker in hockey history - it's entertaining to hear guys from south texas get hyped up over a hockey hit

I think if it was a Flyer that hit a Sabre you would be singing a different tune Bsktballr. I mean if Campbell hadn't have hit him they might have gotten a scoring chance so you have hit the guy.

I would've thought it was a cheap shot regardless of who did it. I don't believe in playing like that.

Calling out the homer trap? It was clean but unnecessary. Coulda been hurt very badly.
You can break up a scoring chance without giving a guy a concussion.

its the playoffs! Players will do anything to win the game.
I bet you Campbell wasn't like "hmm maybe ill hit him." its hockey hitting is allowed.
It wasn't a cheap shot, it was clean hit.

Ok first off, hockey is a very physical game and hits are going to happen. He put his shoulder into him and laid him out, simple as that. It was a perfectly clean hit and a professional should know not to keep his head down. Did I think that Umberger getting hurt was great? No. But as a hockey player myself, I can respect that Campbell was just doing what was natural: laying out a hit. Huge or not, he was just doing his job.
