Joni Pitkanen re-signs with the Flyers. Donald Brashear signs with Washington. Which sucks. Brashear was the man in Philly. I will miss him.

Horcoff resigned with the Oilers and Derek Roy resigns with Buffalo. Auld agrees to a contract with the Panthers after being traded from Vancouver. Interesting thing I found was that Auld was actually drafted by the Panthers and traded to Vancouver for nothing more than pretty much crap...

I would just like to say that Derek Roy's re-signing makes me really happy about the Sabres. I love the way he plays and he has rapidly become one of my favorite players.

Joni Pitkanen re-signs with the Flyers. HUGE, Pitkanen is very good when he's healthy...

"The Florida Panthers have agreed to terms on a one-year deal with forward Stephen Weiss. In addition, defenceman Alexei Semenov has accepted his qualifying offer. " Gainey is talking also (has trade rumors said) to ship David Aebisher for Jay Bouwmeester.
Keenan is looking to land Biron from the Sabres for Jay Bouwmeester.

Another rumor:
To Detroit: Martin Biron - Maxim Afinogenov & a draft pick
to Buffalo: Robert Lang & Nicklas Kronwall

On behalf of the Red Wings, I accept. As long as we can pick up another defenseman somewhere.

The only reason we'd consider that would be if we felt that we wouldn't be able to resign all of our free agents... but if that's all we could get, then I'd rather just see us let Afinigenov get signed by another team... we're already set in centers so there's no point getting Lang, and while I personally think Kronwall has potentail to be a great defensemen, it's not worth giving up a great backup goalie and a great goal scorer for him...
Hopefully we wouldn't be THAT desperate... I don't expect to be signing our key free agents for amounts that would put us in cap trouble anyways...

While I'm not in favor of the deal, I wouldn't neccessarily call Afinogenov a "great" scorer. He's been a huge underachiever and could do much more. At this point with him, I think the potential has passed and this is the player he truly is.

I'm not giving up on him yet. He'll be 27 when the season starts, and with the improvement Briere has had, I truly think he'll be capable of getting a 40 goal season. It wasn't until Martin St. Louis was 29 before he became a scoring threat, and they play the same style of hockey and have pretty much the same size (Afinigenov has a few inches on him but they're nearly just as light with Maxim with the advantage there as well)...
But yeah, I shouldn't have used "great scorer" so loosely...

Finally the Islanders might have a somewhat decent GM...
Peca was signed 1 year for 2.5M
Saku Koivu's brother Mikko was resigned by the Wild
Antoine Vermette whoscored 21 goals last year is resigned by the Sens. If he had an opportunity to play up on some of the better lines, he could have easily had 60 points IMO... He's my darkhorse to breakout for the Sens next year...

Does anybody know what happened with the Islanders? They hired Smith just a couple months ago and now their backup goalie retires and becomes the new GM, kind of strange to me.

Nobody knows what's going on with the Islanders... if hockey got any recognition at all, you'd be hearing about how they make the Knicks look like a great organization. Pretty much whatever the hell happens, happens. That's what happens when you have the worst management in the league...
EDIT: Hold up, now what's going on? Anybody have any other evidence of Garth Snow becoming GM, since ESPN has a very recent article of Smith as the GM...
EDIT DOS: nvm i see it now... odd

All I have to say in regards to the Isles is thank god for them that they got rid of Mike Milbury. He is one of the worst GM's I have ever seen. He's traded away talent like Todd Bertuzzi, Darius Kasparaitis, Roberto Luongo, Zdeno Chara, Wade Redden, etc. because he's impatient and stupid. Good luck to the Isles.
