You're comparing support for teams who have been around 15 or fewer years to franchises like the Flyers who have been playing for 40? Now that's what's stupid in this thread. Well let's try using logic for a second. If a team wins the Stanley Cup and they're still one of the five worst markets in the league, get them the hell out of that city, since it's obvious there's not much that can happen to make people all of the sudden care about hockey. How long should we give Carolina time to make a fan-base? Will they start caring if they win 4 or 5 titles in a decade? I doubt they would even then. I'm sure there are a good amount of hockey fans in Carolina, just not nearly enough to support an NHL team, especially at this point. Most of the people in Carolina now moved here from somewhere else. You have to give the team enough time to form its own fanbase, that doesn't just happen over one year or even a couple years despite a championship (although that helps). Besides, then you would be saying that they are nothing but bandwagon fans anyway.

I'm with David, Carolina I think can support an NHL franchise. It is going to take time to really get a fanbase built in. I use to watch the Canes when they had games on FSN South, and enjoyed it but the only hockey I can see now is Dallas on FSN Southwest.

so this is just outrageous. The NHL is reportedly talking with jerry bruckheimer about owning a team in LAS VEGAS!!!!!!!!! Las Vegas? Are you kidding NHL? If this happens it will seriously mark the end of me being a fan of the NHL. This has to be the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.

Oh please. That won't be happening. The NBA will get a team there before the NHL.

I don't know about that. The NHL will sell it's soul to get some publicity.

I'm not saying it would be a disaster, but I could see why the league would try it.

As much as I don't want to see the league sell out like that, the ratings speak for themselves. Hockey in Vegas equals more betting on hockey which equals more people interested in seeing who wins which equals better ratings. It's not the politically correct choice, but the fan base won't be much worse than some of the crappy markets. Plus it is Vegas. They'll find a way to make it a show...

McGahee is right. The Saturday night NHL game drew the lowest primetime rating in NBC history.

Gary Bettman looks like an idiot now (well, more than he has). After trying to defend why the ratings sucked so bad after Game 3, he claimed "the league is still going in the right direction"... I don't know who's meat he's on, but it's time to sack this guy for someone that can get the league going again, and this time, for real. Not the "Oh we're selling out arenas like never before" crap we've been fed...
It really is a shame, because playoff hockey (if anyone bothers to watch it) is very exciting. While the Cup was a bore for the most part with not the best markets (while Ottawa is in Canada, TSN must have a secret deal with Toronto to give head to every Leaf player in their coverage, leaving no time for any other Canadian team), the first couple rounds were incredible. I'll continue to push for some ESPN2 coverage IN ADDITION TO the coverage of Versus and NBC (I'm accepting Versus showing two games a week max and NBC with four games a year) just so they might mention more than the scores with Melrose on SportsCenter.
Briere and Drury possibly both leaving Buffalo would be as important as Westbrook and Dawkins leaving the Eagles if it would just get more attention...
And this ends another (abridged) rant about how hockey is shooting itself in the foot...

Gary Bettman is easily the worst of the four major sports commissioners....he makes Bud Selig look like Einstein.
I say I want a revolution.

Not to defend Bettman (he's an idiot), but it isn't all his fault. The greedy owners certainly contribute their fair share to the erosion of the league. The league needs to lower ticket prices and build a fan base, plain and simple.

The league needs to go to ESPN. Take the loss now if you must. ESPN controls a lot of the headlines in the sports world, so the NHL should go to them.

I watched the playoffs and the games of the finals that I could (3,4,5) and really enjoyed it. It was the best sports I've watched this year, hell I enjoyed it more than the NCAA tourny. That being said, I don't get to see any regular season games sans the Stars (who I don't like). I would love to see ESPN carry some games, because I don't get versus nor will I actually pay for it. So that leaves me with NBC's coverage of hockey, which sucks. I do need a team to bandwagon on for next year, any suggestions? I'm leaning towards LA because I'm doing a dynasty with them on 07, but they kind of suck....
