Moves like those are why Detroit is consistently one of the best teams in the league. They realize they're going to lose a good, but 38 year old, defenseman, and replace him with a 6 year younger one with more of an offensive prowess for essentially the same price per year...
If they'd just get a better goalie...

I am glad the Flyers nabbed Briere but it really sucks to see the Rangers get both Drury and Gomez. I hope that they fall off the face of the Earth.

Any two of Drury, Shanahan, and Gomez plus Jagr makes me piss my pants in fear... the other thing the Rangers have going for them is that even though Lunvquist isn't close to being an elite goalie in the league, he's still probably the 2nd best in the division behind Brodeur...

That is what I am worried about. Hopefully, they can find some way to completely collapse into themselves (like a fat person).

The Bruins got Manny Fernandez in a trade where they gave up a young developing forward and a 4th round pick.
I think this will work out good, but I'm sad because this means less Tim Thomas.
And, btw, the Flyers are on a tear signing people so far.

I like that the Flyers are trading away some guys as well. I didn't want to see Joni Pitkanen go but Jason Smith and Jofrey Lopul will be good additions to the team. Homer is making Bobby Clarke look like a bitch. GO NHL.COM

Everyone liked Pitkanen, but it was just too obvious he couldn't succeed in Philly. Perfect example of a guy who's gonna do great in a new environment...

I like Briere and all, but why do I get the feeling that Philly will regret that deal by year 3..

Also, Pitkanen was really unhappy in Philadelphia. A lot has come out since the trade. Glad to see him get a chance to become something great.

GO NHL.COM Lol. You would expect so much more from a sports official site. I really have nothing else to add except laughter.

The Flyers have supposedly front loaded Briere's contract, so I have no idea how that will help out in the long run. I mean, I know it means less money but I think it just means a hold out on his part.

Hey, if the league is making money and teams want to give players the max, let them. The problem before was there was no set limit. At least there's some control now. Also, am I the only one who thinks the Rangers did the right thing? They needed help offensively and brought in 2 premier centers. They strengthened up a real weak spot and just made themselves contenders.

Briere makes 10 million the first year, and will average 6 million throughout the next 7 years. Gomez will also make 10 million next year, and will average 6.5 million for the next 6 years.

yeah but it sets a precedent is the problem. Look at the players next year. Do you think Heatley, Ovechkin, or Crosby will settle for anything less than 10 mil per season? And BTW the league isn't making that much money, sure the cap went up but that doesn't mean that the small market teams can afford 50+ mil a season. It just means that teams like the rangers and leafs make the league top and bottom heavy (meaning lots of rich and lots of poor but no balance) league. What happens next year when it goes to 55 or the next year when its at 65. Face it small market teams (or upper level teams for that matter) cannot continue to give above average, at best, players like Gomez and Briere 10 mil (no matter if it is for 1 year or 10 years).

I'd hope that if anything, it would make the NHL realize relocation/retraction is the only way to go...
I wouldn't be too worried (yet) about this. The NHL shouldn't be fooling itself by thinking they can continue to raise the salary cap over the next few years, and soon enough, things should start to balance out again. I agree that if the cap continues to go up too quickly too soon, we'll be in a heap of problems, and quite frankly, the NHL needs to put aside its new ego that they think they've mattered, because the ratings, profits, and ticket sales have shown they haven't.
If anything, it's the minimum aspect of the cap that screwed teams over. Nashville's payroll was less than half the cap, but when the minimum payroll was put at $35M (around), they ended up losing tons of money, and now are in the financial dilemma we've talked about since June.

Zubrus goes to the Devils, but Buffalo decides we can resign 40 year old Numminen. Guerrin goes to the Isles and Kevin Weekes signs with the Devils.
