The Sabres got screwed thanks to Kevin Lowe who offered big money for Vanek and the Sabres were force to tie the offer up. Lowe is a pretty smart GM. He plans on doing the same thing with Parizé.

As much as it pissed me off we had to pay that much for him, I have to agree, that it was a very smart move. Hell, the Oilers could have offered $60M and we probably still would have signed Vanek, simply because we've got nobody left..

the oilers were picked to finish 13th in the west this year and I honestly think that is being generous. Their D is alright but they dont have anyone to score goals. I see alot of 1-0 or 2-0 losses in our future.
oh and f**k lowe what a douche bag. Penner for three draft picks and like 20 mil or something. Ridiculous.

I've been reading he is borderline on a return. If he does, it won't be for a while. I think it is hard for any team to swing the money if they are close to the cap because of the injury concern.

Would make me a bit sad to see him go, but assuming he does bow out...where does this put him in terms of HOF status?

Now, his regular season numbers are pretty good and would look fantastic if he played 1,000 games (hell, he is almost averaging an assist a game over his career), but I think his playoff reputation is stronger. He's always been regarded as an elite threat in the playoffs and a guy who could carry a team to the cup when healthy (he dominated in '01 before rupturing his spleen, as well as in '02 when they were eliminated in the West finals by Detroit).
Also, he's indisputably one of the 2-3 best players alive for nearly a decade. I say he's in first ballot, but i'm also a touch biased.
