(1-0) #19 BYU Cougars at Washington Huskies (0-1) HUSKY STADIUM - SEATTLE, WASHINGTON SEPTEMBER 6TH, 2008 Huskies Drop Second StraightCougars win in waning minutes
By CHET HAMLIN Seattle Post-Intelligencer Husky Beat Writer 9/7/2008
Seattle - Bryce Mahuika's seven-yard touchdown catch with less than a minute to go sealed a 24-21 win for 19th-ranked BYU at Washington. Quarterback Max Hall completed 26-of-40 passes for 309 yards and three scores.
Washington took a 21-17 lead on Jake Locker's five-yard pass to freshman tight end Kavario Middleton with about five minutes to go in the game, but BYU then embarked on the game-winning drive.
Chris Polk rushed for 122 yards on fourteen carries, including a 95-yard run in the second quarter to tie the game at seven. The run was the longest for a freshman in team history, and set a new school record. As a team, the Huskies rushed for 188 yards.
"We played well enough to win this game," said head coach T.B. Miz. "We had it right there at the end, but couldn't finish it out. Too many turnovers will do you in, and that's what happened to us."
Washington turned it over five times, including three fumbles. Locker threw two interceptions, the last one sealing the Cougars' win.
Daniel Teo-Nesheim had six tackles, a sack, a forced fumble, and a recovery to spearhead the Washington defense.Final Score: #19 BYU - 24 WASHINGTON - 21BYU STATISTICAL LEADERSPassing:Max Hall - 26/40, 309 yards, 3 TD Rushing:Harvey Unga - 13 carries, 49 yards, 3.8 ypc Manase Tonga - 8 carries, 38 yards, 4.7 ypc Receiving:Austin Collie - 6 receptions, 90 yards, 15.0 ypc, TD Jake Murphy - 5 receptions, 67 yards, 13.4 ypc, TD Defense:Grant Nelson - 7 tackles Gary Nagy - 6 tackles (TFL) George Pittman - 5 tackles Kicking:Mitch Payne - 1/1 FG, 3/3 XP, 6 points Kick Returns:Manase Tonga - 1 return, 22 yards Punt Returns:Harvey Unga - 2 returns, 10 yards, 5.0 avg WASHINGTON STATISTICAL LEADERSPassing:Jake Locker - 18/27, 182 yards, TD, 2 INT Rushing:Chris Polk - 14 carries, 122 yards, 8.6 ypc, TD Jake Locker - 9 carries, 33 yards, 3.7 ypc, TD Receiving:Jermaine Kearse - 4 receptions, 41 yards, 10.2 ypc Alvin Logan - 2 receptions, 38 yards, 19.0 ypc Defense:Chris Stevens - 7 tackles Daniel Te'o-Nesheim - 6 tackles (2 TFL), sack, FF, FR Donald Butler - 4 tackles (TFL) Kicking:Ryan Perkins - 0/1 FG, 3/3 XP, 3 points Kick Returns:Jordan Polk - 3 returns, 60 yards, 20.0 avg Punt Returns:Jordan Polk - 2 returns, 14 yards, 7.0 avg

RECRUITING NEWS WASHINGTON OL TRIMS LIST
By Tom Herbert Rivals.com Recruiting Editor
Seattle native Drew Dudley had to make a very tough decision yesterday, as he trimmed his favorite school from his top five list.
"I hated taking Washington off the list, but that's just how it has to be," said Dudley, a three-star offensive tackle. "I want to blaze my own path, and while Washington has hit a skid lately, they'll be back."
Dudley's cousin, Bryan Fortune, played at Washington back in the 1980's, and he said he got some friendly advice from the cousin.
"He told me just go where you fit best, and if that's not at Washington, don't do it," said Dudley. "I've been there many times, and I just don't feel it from them, which is sad, because I like rooting for the Huskies and always will."
Dudley's final five are (in no particular order) Fresno State, West Virginia, Cal, USC, and Utah State, but has two that stand out to him the most.
"Utah State and Fresno State would have to be my two leaders, but you could interchange them right now," he noted. "I'm looking forward to setting up official visits and the like."
Stay tuned to Rivals.com for updates on Dudley and others.

Very nice win (finally) over Stanford and VERY nice pick up in Wilson. Dude looks like a monster at safety and should definitely sure up your secondary in the future.
Why'd you stop posting this on MM?

Very nice win (finally) over Stanford and VERY nice pick up in Wilson. Dude looks like a monster at safety and should definitely sure up your secondary in the future. Why'd you stop posting this on MM? The majority of the posters there are pretty hard-core PS3/360 guys...I don't know if they'd read a Wii-based dynasty since I can't post pictures. I'm in the process of selling my 360, so that option is out. If you can get past the subpar graphics (which they aren't as bad as they are made out to be) the Wii version of 09 actually plays a pretty damn good game. I've gotten used to the passing game, and my sliders are set up to where I can run the ball much better than before. The Wii version also has suspensions and medical redshirts, two things that aren't in the other next-gen versions. But I see that SCVII is posting on different sites with his Jamar Turner story, so I guess it wouldn't be too difficult to do so.

(2-0) #2 Oklahoma Sooners at Washington Huskies (0-2) HUSKY STADIUM - SEATTLE, WASHINGTON SEPTEMBER 13TH, 2008 Too much, Too SoonerJones collects three sacks
By CHET HAMLIN Seattle Post-Intelligencer Husky Beat Writer 9/14/2008
Seattle - Washington was well on its way to shocking the world when they held a 14-7 halftime lead against the second-ranked Oklahoma Sooners. Jake Locker had two total scores in the first half, one running and passing each. But the second half was a different story, as Locker tossed three interceptions in the second half, and Oklahoma out-scored the Huskies 28-7 in the second half to take the 35-21 win.
After rushing for 188 yards against BYU last weekend, Oklahoma held the Huskies to 101 yesterday, and Locker led the team with just forty-seven yards on seventeen carries. Locker injured an ankle against the Sooners in the fourth quarter, but should be 100% for the game in two weeks against Stanford at home.
"We'll use the bye week to get some guys healed," said head coach T.B. Miz, now 0-3 in his rookie season as coach. "Jake tweaked an ankle, and (Chris) Polk turned a knee...both should be fine in a couple of weeks for Stanford, though."
Sam Bradford showed why he is a Heisman candidate in 2008, throwing for 309 yards and three scores on 22-of-28 passing. He didn't throw an incomplete pass until 7:31 left in the second quarter, going 12 for 12 in that stretch.
"He's an amazing talent with great awareness of the field at his age," said Miz. "He's well coached, and technically sound...looking forward to seeing how he develops as a quarterback at this level and then in the NFL. He didn't make a poor throw at all today, but was unlucky with some drops."
Despite the loss, junior defensive end Darrion Jones had a monster game, compiling seven tackles, six for a loss, and three sacks, all career highs. He was in the Sooner backfield for most of the game, frustrating Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops.
"He's a quick end, and gave our big tackles some problems," said Stoops. "We were able to overcome that and make plays when we needed to, though."
Washington heads into the bye week with many questions, and few answers, if any. But can they find any answers within this season? Losses against Stanford and Arizona after the bye week could turn this season into a complete disaster, while two wins or a split, likely a win at home against the Cardinal and a loss to Arizona in Tucson, could right the ship and keep the fans and alumni off the back of the team.Final Score: #2 OKLAHOMA - 35 WASHINGTON - 21OKLAHOMA STATISTICAL LEADERSPassing:Sam Bradford - 22/28, 309 yards, 3 TD Rushing:DeMarco Murray - 16 carries, 101 yards, 6.6 ypc, TD Jermie Calhoun - 1 carry, 0 yards Receiving:Juaquin Iglesias - 9 rec, 167 yards, 18.6 ypc, 2 TD Manuel Johnson - 5 rec, 56 yards, 11.2 ypc Defense:Ryan Reynolds - 10 tackles (4 TFL), sack, INT Jeremy Beal - 8 tackles (4 TFL), sack Keenan Clayton - 7 tackles (2 TFL), sack Kicking:Tress Way - 5/5 XP, 5 points Kick Returns:DeMarco Murray - 4 returns, 124 yards, 31.0 avg Punt Returns:DeMarco Murray - 2 returns, 14 yards, 7.0 avg WASHINGTON STATISTICAL LEADERSPassing:Jake Locker - 16/34, 204 yards, TD, 3 INT Rushing:Jake Locker - 17 carries, 47 yards, 2.8 ypc, TD Chris Polk - 16 carries, 41 yards, 2.6 ypc Receiving:Alvin Logan - 5 rec, 74 yards, 14.8 ypc Jermaine Kearse - 3 rec, 36 yards, 12.0 ypc Defense:Darrion Jones - 7 tackles (6 TFL), 3 sacks Donald Butler - 7 tackles Chris Stevens - 7 tackles Kicking:Ryan Perkins - 0/1 FG, 3/3 XP, 3 points Kick Returns:Jordan Polk - 3 returns, 81 yards, 27.0 avg Punt Returns:Jordan Polk - 4 returns, 32 yards, 8.0 avg

WILSON DOWN TO THREE
By John Morton Rivals.com Recruiting Editor
The last time that we talked to East Renton (Wash.) safety Shawn Wilson, he was down to his final eight. Now he's narrowed that list to three, and wants to end the process soon.
"I'm setting up official visits right now," said Wilson, who has a final three of Utah, Washington, and Oregon. "Oregon moved into my top three after a conversation I had with a few of the coaches on an official visit...they have great facilities and a pretty good game atmosphere."
Wilson says that Utah holds a slight lead over the other two.
"They're really pushing for me hard to play at Utah," said Wilson. "They tell me they can offer a big-time atmosphere without all of the big-time distractions that a big-city campus has...I really have no preference for location, so Utah is an attractive option."
When can we expect a decision to come down?
"Soon, very soon...possibly within the next few weeks provided I can get some official visits set up," he said. I'd like to take all five of my official visits, but if I don't, that's how it goes."

(0-4) Stanford Cardinal at Washington Huskies (0-3) HUSKY STADIUM - SEATTLE, WASHINGTON SEPTEMBER 27TH, 2008 The Cardinal PrincipleHuskies stave off late comeback attempt
By CHET HAMLIN Seattle Post-Intelligencer Husky Beat Writer 9/28/2008
Seattle - Thanks to Jake Locker's Herculean effort against Stanford, the sophomore practically willed his winless Huskies to a 31-28 win over Stanford yesterday at Husky Stadium. Locker threw for 305 yards and four touchdowns, and added an additional 121 yards and one touchdown on the ground in victory. Stanford was down by more than three scores, but made it close at the end.
"It's a good feeling to get that monkey off our backs," said Locker. "This gives us a lot of confidence heading into next week's game, and for the rest of the season."
Stanford has now lost five in a row to start the season for the first time in school history.
The Huskies actually led 31-7 late in the third quarter before Stanford started their comeback. Jim Dray and Richard Sherman each caught touchdown passes in the third quarter, and Daniel Baldwin scored on a 69-yard punt return in the fourth quarter to pull to within three, 31-28, with just two minutes to go. But Washington was able to run the clock out to preserve the win.
"I'm not sure we win this game at the start of the season," said head coach Travis Brownley. "We're starting to grow as a team, getting used to the schemes, plays...and it's starting to show on the field."
Washington now heads to Arizona to face the Wildcats, who are 3-1, coming off a 30-24 loss at UCLA.
"Make no mistake about it, they have a solid offense, led by their fantastic quarterback," said Brownley. "They'll be tough to beat, and we have to go down there to do it. No easy task....we'll have to be solid on both sides of the ball to bring home the win, no doubt."

WILSON MAKES IT OFFICIAL
By Sean McBride Rivals.com Recruiting Editor 9/30/2008
A last-minute decision by East Renton (Wash.) safety Shawn Wilson to forgo an unofficial to Oregon to take an official visit to Washington turned out to be a great move for both sides, as Wilson verbally committed to Washington two days after returning from the visit.
"Yes, I've decided to end the process and become a Husky," said Wilson, who seemed relieved to be done. "I was going to go to the Oregon game with some friends this past weekend, but my recruiting coach, coach Blum gave me a call and asked if I would take an official visit, and I decided to go ahead and go."
Wilson described what it was like visiting the campus and getting to see all of the inner workings of the program.
"We took a general tour of the campus, which is customary for all of the recruits that come through," said Wilson. "Took in the game Saturday, and ate lunch with team captain Chris Stevens on Sunday after the tour. After that, I went down below to see the facilities, and although they aren't as nice as some that I've seen, they are working on improving them, and that shows some initiative from the university to improve the program. To end the visit, I sat down with the head coach, coach Brownley, and coach Blum to discuss my chances for early playing time, and they said that I can come in and work hard and earn my spot...they want the best players to play, and that's great to hear."
He did say that it was hard to call the other coaches and tell them that he wouldn't be visiting their respective school was hard to do, but it was a necessary evil that had to be done.
"I had to call the staffs at Oregon and Utah to tell them I wouldn't be committing to them...it was hard, but they took it well," said Wilson. "I could tell they were disappointed, but it made me feel better that they were pretty tactful about it."
Wilson sports ten offers in all, eight from three BCS conferences, and two non-BCS schools in Utah and BYU. Besides Washington, he held offers from Oregon, Cal, Washington State, Colorado, UCLA, Arizona, and Nebraska.

RESERVE HB FREEMAN SUSPENDED
By Chet Hamlin Seattle Post-Intelligencer Beat Writer 10/3/08
Washington head coach Travis Brownley has suspended reserve halfback David Freeman for one game, for breaking unspecified team rules. It's rumored that Freeman missed at least two class periods in one week, which under Brownley is an automatic one-game suspension.
"David's going to sit this one out," said Brownley. "We've sat down with him, and he understands what he's done....you don't follow the rules and regulations of the program, you're not going to play, period."
Freeman, who had been running second-team for the last couple of games over Brandon Johnson, who started six games as a true freshman last year, has carried the ball just eight times for twelve yards this season. Johnson will back up true freshman standout Chris Polk, who has 291 yards rushing and a touchdown in four starts.
Washington kicks off tomorrow afternoon at 7 P.M. Eastern time in Tucson against the 3-1 Arizona Wildcats, on Fox Sports Southwest.

(1-3) Washington Huskies at Arizona Wildcats (3-1) ARIZONA STADIUM - TUCSON, ARIZONA OCTOBER 4TH, 2008 Wildcats Turn Back HuskiesBig third quarter dooms Washington
By CHET HAMLIN Seattle Post-Intelligencer Husky Beat Writer 10/5/2008
Tucson, Ariz. - Despite rushing for 224 yards as a team, and getting out to a 10-0 lead at the half on the road, Arizona then scored the game's next twenty-four points to coast to a 24-13 win over Washington yesterday afternoon. Xavier Smith keyed the Wildcats' attack with two touchdowns in Arizona's 21-point third quarter.
"It's incredibly hard to win on the road no matter where you play," said Washington head coach Travis Brownley. "They had a crowd that was fired up, and that plays a role when you have a young team. But make no bones about it, we didn't play well coming out of the break. We gave up three touchdowns in that quarter thanks to some turnovers, and they turn the tide of a game pretty quickly."
For Arizona quarterback Willie Tuitama, it wasn't one of his best passing days, but he was efficient and turnover-free in leading his team to the win, with 116 yards passing on 15-of-24 attempts.
"We came out after the half and didn't panic when we got down early," said the senior quarterback. "We played mistake-free football all day long, and that was the big factor for us, I think."
Washington has to regroup over the next bye week, before heading back home to face Oregon State and Notre Dame in non-conference action. Washington also expects reserve halfback David Freeman back after serving a one-game suspension for violating team rules, but will be without defensive lineman Cameron Elisara, who has turf toe and will likely sit out the game in two weeks against the Beavers.
"Turf toe, as most of you know, is a pretty painful injury," said Brownley. "We'll re-evaluate him this upcoming weekend, but it's pretty doubtful he's going to be ready for Oregon State in two weeks."
