(3-8) Washington Huskies at Cal Golden Bears (4-7) CALIFORNIA STADIUM - BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA DECEMBER 6th, 2008 Missed OpportunitiesWashington blows fourth-quarter advantage
By CHET HAMLIN Seattle Post-Intelligencer Husky Beat Writer 12/7/2008
Berkeley - In disappointing fashion, Washington ended their season with a 25-18 loss at Cal last night in Berkeley. Nate Longshore filled in for an injured Kevin Riley and threw for 150 yards and two picks in the win. However, he was helped out by Tracy Slocum's ninety yards and two scores on the ground. Jahvid Best chipped in with forty-four yards receiving.
Cal took a 7-3 lead after one quarter, and then Slocum scored the first of his two touchdowns early in the second quarter to put the Bears up 14-3 midway through the frame.
But Washington fought back, and scored on a two-yard plunge from Brandon Johnson with just a few minutes to go in the first half. The Huskies went for two and converted, pulling to within three at the half, 14-11.
"It's the last game of the season, there's nothing to lose, so why not go for two and stay within a field goal," said head coach T.B. Miz. "We had some plays drawn up that we would use in such a situation, so we went ahead and decided to go for it."
After Jordan Kay added a 33-yard field goal on Cal's first possession of the second half, Washington marched down the field to take an 18-17 lead heading into the final quarter. That held until the last minute and a half of the contest, when Slocum rambled in from the seven-yard line to go up 23-18. Cal tacked on the two-point conversion with a Longshore pass to LaReylle Cunningham, making it a one-score game just to tie.
But Jake Locker was intercepted on the final pass of the game, sealing the win for the Bears.
"The win doesn't do anything for us in terms of bowl eligibility," said Cal coach Jeff Tedford. "But it does give us a bit of momentum heading into next year, and doesn't leave a bad taste in our mouths all off-season."

STEVENS EARNS PAC-10 HONORS
By CHET HAMLIN Seattle Post-Intelligencer Husky Beat Writer 1/13/2008Senior linebacker Chris Stevens earned 2nd Team All-Pac-10 honors this past weekend, as he was the only Husky to grace any of ESPN's post-season awards. The 6-foot, 215-pounder from Mojave, Calif., racked up a team-leading sixty-five tackles, six sacks, and four interceptions en route to also winning the team's defensive MVP and team MVP awards at the team's banquet Saturday night.
"It's a great honor to see the hard work that you've put in over the last four years finally pay off," said Stevens. "Now it's time to see how I do in the draft, and just work hard and improve my positioning there, and we'll see what happens."
Most experts have Stevens as a late first-day, early second-day pick.

NEW DEATH PENALTY?
By ROB JONES Associated Press 1/29/2009
Several prominent schools were hit by NCAA sanctions over the last few months, such as SEC powers Tennessee, Florida, and Georgia, who were each docked ten scholarships over the next two seasons. But maybe the hardest hit school was Buffalo out of the Mid-American Conference, coached by Turner Gill, former quarterback at Nebraska. Allegedly illegal calls to recruits were made, and several recruits recieved cash bonuses, and three different players committed felonies during the season, only to be suspended for just two games apiece.
As far as the suspended players go, Gill admitted he could have been harder on them, but the illegal recruiting going on, he said he had zero knowledge of it, and didn't condone it.
"I had no idea my assistants were doing the alleged actions behind mine and the Athletic Department's back," said Gill in a statement from the University. "But, whether I was aware of it or not, it happened under my watch, leaving me solely responsible for the actions. We will accept whatever punishment we will receive."
And boy, did they get hit. A two-month investigation will cost them a whopping forty-five scholarships over the next three seasons, and have been forbidden to appear on television or earn bowl bids or conference/national title games over the next two seasons. And, the athletic director issued an ultimatum to Gill - either fire the named assistants, or the whole staff, guilty or not, including Gill, would be fired.
However, all of his assistants that were named in the investigation stepped down, including his offensive coordinator, recruiting coordinator, and linebackers coach. Only the special teams coach and secondary coach were not named in the report, and therefore were retained.

COACHES DISCUSS 2009 RECRUITING CLASS
By CHET HAMLIN Seattle Post-Intelligencer Husky Beat Writer 2/6/2008Well, NLI (National Letter of Intent) day is here, and all seventeen verbal commitments to Washington's staff have become signed, sealed, and delivered LOI's. Head coach Travis Brownley and offensive coordinator Gary Blum, who also serves as the recruiting coordinator, discussed the class and what it can bring to the table.
The class headliner was Shawn Watson, who verballed early to the school, and continued to attend recruiting workouts despite being committed to Washington. That hard work vaulted him from in the fringe area of the Rivals.com Top 250, all the way to the country's 30th-ranked player by that same service. In addition, he was also bumped up to be the nation's top strong safety prospect by Rivals. He just barely missed the cut for five-star status, as well.
"Shawn's a player that we targeted from the beginning, and I told Coach Brownley, that we have to get this kid on campus for a visit," said Blum. "He'll make an immediate impact in our defensive backfield. He's a solid tackler with tremendous size and speed to cover receivers and tight ends." Wilson had late interest from Southern Cal, Texas, and Florida, but turned them all down.
Another top-rated prospect that the staff was able to secure was four-star linebacker Manuel Rogers, who was a soft verbal to Southern Cal early in the process before re-opening his recruitment, and two months later, verballed to Washington.
"Manny's another kid that we just had to have on defense," said Blum. "He's not real big, but he can cover and runs like a safety. I don't know if he'll be in the mix for playing time right now, but he's a player that we're real excited for down the road."
Brownley has stated in the past that it's important to get a quarterback in every class. Pine Lake product Jeff Jenkins is the lone quarterback signee in the class. He grew up a Husky fan, and got a late offer from the school, which he jumped on. The 6'4", 213-pound two-star pro-style quarterback threw for 2,776 yards and 30 touchdowns against just ten interceptions in a pass-happy offense in high school, but his speed might have kept more high-profile schools away.
"Jeff isn't the most agile quarterback out there, but he's not a statue in the pocket," said Brownley. "He's very accurate, puts very good touch on the ball, and is able to sidestep defenders while still looking downfield. He has great awareness for a young kid, and he'll battle for a starting spot down the road. He's better than whatever star rating he has."
A full, alphabetical listing of the entire Class of 2009 will be listed in tomorrow's edition of the Post-Intelligencer.

SPRING PRACTICE CONCLUDES
By CHET HAMLIN Seattle Post-Intelligencer Husky Beat Writer 3/28/2009The 2009 version of the Washington football squad concluded spring practices this past week with the Purple and Gold Game, with the Purple squad, led by a mixture of the first and third-teamers, and the Gold team, which had about 85% of second-string players. The Purple team won 35-24 in a pretty thrilling contest at Husky Stadium, with Spring MVP's going out to Jake Locker on offense, and Darrion Jones on defense.
Three true freshmen were on campus for the spring - safety Shawn Wilson, linebacker Manuel Rogers, and defensive end Lionel Cole all enrolled a semester early, and were present for spring drills. The rest of the freshmen and any walk-ons will arrive in August to begin fall practice.
Wilson had a phenomenal spring, with a total of twenty-five tackles in the three spring scrimmages, including ten in the Purple and Gold Game. According to head coach Travis Brownley, he's earned a starting spot - for right now.
"He's our most athletic safety on the roster right now," noted Brownley. "Getting him in for the spring was pretty important to us, and we're letting him go home to experience the rest of his senior year despite graduating early, since his high school is going to let him do so."
Brownley also reported that one returning letterman, and two walk-ons have left the team - walk-on quarterback Taylor Bean, walk-on safety Kevin Parker, and reserve defensive end Kalani Aldrich have all left the team for personal reasons, according to the coach.
The Huskies are coming off of a 3-9 season in 2008, but have a great shot at getting off to a 2-0 start, facing Idaho and in-state FCS opponent Eastern Washington, both in Seattle.
