THE APPLE CUP GAME Apple Cup TrophyThe Apple Cup is the annual college football game between the two largest universities in the U.S. state of Washington; cross-state rivals the University of Washington (UW) Huskies and the Washington State University (WSU) Cougars. Traditionally, it is the final game of the regular season, played on the Saturday preceding Thanksgiving at Husky Stadium in Seattle during odd years, and WSU's Martin Stadium in Pullman during even years. From 1950-80 (except for 1954), WSU hosted the game at Spokane's Joe Albi Stadium. The WSU Cougars won three of these fifteen games in Spokane (1958, 1968, 1972), and have won five of the thirteen played at Martin Stadium (1982, 1988, 1992, 1994, 2004). Before 1962, the teams played for the "Governor's Trophy", but with Washington being famous for its apple crop, the game was renamed the "Apple Cup" in 1962, and the Apple Cup trophy has been awarded to the winning team ever since. With the recent lengthening of the regular season schedule to 12 games, there was a movement to push the Apple Cup to the other side of Thanksgiving, which would allow a bye week sometime during the season. In the 2006 season, both teams played 12 straight weeks without a break, leaving the two teams noticeably fatigued. For the first time, the 2007 edition of the Apple Cup was played two days after Thanksgiving. Beginning with the 2007 Apple Cup (the 100th meeting between Washington and Washington State), the game has been sponsored by Boeing. The first rivalry game, played in 1900, resulted in a tie between UW and the Washington Agricultural College. Through 2007, there have been 100 games between the schools, with the Huskies holding a 64-30-6 advantage. UW's longest win streak has been eight games, achieved twice: (1959-66 and 1974-81). Although WSU has never won three consecutive Apple Cups, the Cougars have won consecutive Cups on seven separate occasions: (1929-30, 1953-54, 1957-58, 1967-68, 1972-73, 1982-83, and 2004-05). Although Washington currently leads the overall series, the Cougars have taken three of the past four meetings include a last-minute win in the 2007 meeting. 2008 PREVIEW OFFENSE Washington's native son, Jake Locker, is back for his second season of leading the Husky offense. But will his role change under the new coaching staff? Locker was recruited as a quarterback that could be a true dual-threat - a player that ran just well enough to keep defenses honest, but was still a better passer than runner. Ty Willingham seemed to rely on him too much as a runner, and not enough as a passer in his tenure, but that's about to change. Offensive coordinator Gary Blum, a well-known developer of quarterbacks, wants Locker to stay true to his game as a scrambler, but with Locker's strong arm and mobility, expect to see some adjustments to the offense to better fit his talents. With several letterwinners along the offensive line returning, a young, but talented corps of receivers, and a nice stable of runningbacks returning, the offense should improve this year. But by how much? DEFENSE The Huskies were amongst the worst defensive squads in the Pac-10 last year, finishing last in yards per game, eighth in points allowed per game, and was also last against the pass not only in the conference, but also in the country. New defensive coordinator Todd Scottsworth is a proponent of the Cover 2 defense, and unlike last year's defensive scheme, Scottsworth is more conservative coach when it comes to defense, with occasional blitzing. But when he does blitz, he likes to bring the house. Returnees Donald Butler, Cameron Elisara, Mesphin Forrester, and Daniel Te'o-Nesheim look to lead the defense, but junior Darrion Jones, who switched from outside linebacker to defensive end, had a great spring, and might be the star of the defense. He's flourished so far in Scottsworth's system in practices and simulated scrimmages. OVERALL New head coach T.B. Miz has some work to do. This season has the potential to be a very long season in Seattle, with youth abound, an entirely new head coach and new staff, and a fan base that is beginning to get impatient in terms of results. While the Pac-10 isn't extremely difficult this season outside of Southern Cal, the non-conference slate is rather tough with BYU, Oklahoma, and Notre Dame. However, all of those games are at home, which means that they could steal one, maybe two if the chips fall right. Three wins would be a solid season with the lack of talent. Two would be alright, but progress must be shown throughout the season. One, or worse, zero wins would put Miz on a warm seat. Stanford and Oregon State look like the most likely wins in conference, but a win over Washington State, especially after last season's collapse in Seattle, would make the alumni base pretty happy regardless.

(0-0) Washington Huskies at #23 Oregon Ducks (0-0) AUTZEN STADIUM - EUGENE, OREGON AUGUST 30TH, 2008 Duck, Duck, GooseOffense Sluggish in New Coaches' Debut
By CHET HAMLIN Seattle Post-Intelligencer Husky Beat Writer 8/31/2008
Eugene, Ore. - Jeremiah Johnson's 115 yards on twenty carries paced the 23rd-ranked Oregon Ducks to a 21-10 victory at home over Washington in new head coach T.B. Miz's debut. Jake Locker completed 17-of-34 passes for 123 yards and a touchdown, but tossed two picks in the process.
"We looked very sluggish early on and couldn't establish a running game at all," said Miz. "Oregon's defense is solid and I give them credit for a good gameplan, but I think we could have done better."
Neither passing game was very good in the rain-soaked contest. Nate Costa of Oregon completed less than half of his passes, throwing for 147 yards and two scores against three interceptions.
D'Andre Goodwin led the Huskies in receiving, catching eight passes for sixty-two yards. Locker and freshman halfback Chris Polk each rushed for sixty yards.
"I thought we played pretty well on defense given the conditions...tackling was tough, but they have a pretty potent offense," noted Miz. "I think you could say our defense is ahead of the offense at this point, like in most years."
It doesn't get any easier for the Huskies, as they'll face their second ranked team in as many games, as the nineteenth-ranked BYU Cougars check into Seattle for the Huskies' home opener. Kickoff from Seattle will take place at 8 P.M. RECRUITING NEWS EVERGREEN STATE SAFETY LIKES HUSKIES
By Tom Herbert Rivals.com Recruiting Editor
When he's not aggressively pursuing halfbacks and tight ends upfield, East Renton (Wash.) safety Shawn Wilson is hitting the books, sporting a 3.8 GPA at East Renton High. But academics isn't the top thing he looks for in a school.
"I feel like I have a lot to offer a program in terms of athletics and academics," said Wilson, a four-star safety. "It's all about feeling comfortable in my surroundings, whether that's close to home or on the other side of the country."
Wilson could probably go to any school he wants to - he's one of the nation's top ten safety prospects. He doesn't claim to have favorites, but does like several schools that have stood out so far.
"Most of my schools that I'm looking at are in the Pac-10, but a few others outside of that," he said. "This list could expand or shrink depending on what schools come calling for my services. USC, Cal, Oregon, Washington, Wyoming, Hawai'i...those stand out right now. There are a few others as well beyond that list that I like, but haven't received anything from them beyond mail."
Stay tuned to Rivals.com for all of the latest updates on Wilson and others.
