(2-3) Oregon State Beavers at Washington Huskies (1-4) HUSKY STADIUM - SEATTLE, WASHINGTON OCTOBER 18TH, 2008 Blitzed by the BeaversBackup quarterback leads OSU comeback effort
By CHET HAMLIN Seattle Post-Intelligencer Husky Beat Writer 10/19/2008
Seattle - I think head coach T.B. Miz put it best at the press conference when he said, "We out-coached ourselves, and it showed." Trying to keep the heat on Beaver backup quarterback Lyle Moevao, Washington defensive coordinator Todd Scottsworth called for blitzes when he should have stayed in a base defense to protect the lead, and Moevao and the Beaver offense made them pay. The Huskies blew a halftime lead or tie in their second straight game in a heart-pounding 25-24 loss to Oregon State last night.
Moevao entered the game when starter Sean Canfield went down midway through the second quarter with a sprained knee. Reports out of Oregon State is that he's fine, and will play next week. The impish Moevao, all 5'10" and 235 pounds of him, with his team down 24-13 at the start of the fourth quarter, engineered two touchdown drives late. His first touchdown of that quarter was to Kyle Brown, who hauled in a six-yard pass. However, the two-point conversion try was no good.
"That gave us a little lift on the sidelines to see the defense step up and stop the two," said Miz. "Didn't last long though."
After a Washington punt with 2:48 to go, Moevao led the Beavers down the field again, before finding tight end Gabe Miller on a ten-yard touchdown pass with just 1:13 to go. But again, the two-point try missed, and Oregon State held on to a slim one-point lead, 25-24.
But Oregon State's Al Afalava ended any hope of a last-second win for the Huskies, as he intercepted Jake Locker with just a few ticks left on the clock, sealing a big road win.
Locker finished with another Herculean effort, throwing for 257 yards while rushing for another ninety-five yards and three total touchdowns (2 pass, 1 rush).
"I'm here to help the team win," said Locker. "When we don't win, I feel like I didn't do my best. Heck, there are times when we win I don't feel I did very well. I just want to win, and it's a little frustrating how this is all turning out."Final Score: OREGON STATE - 25 WASHINGTON - 24OREGON STATE STATISTICAL LEADERSPassing:Lyle Moevao - 8/14, 106 yards, 2 TD, 2 INT Rushing:Jordan Jenkins - 15 carries, 75 yards, 5.0 ypc Jeremy Francis - 3 carries, 18 yards, 6.0 ypc Receiving:Kyle Brown - 4 receptions, 110 yards, 27.5 ypc, TD Chris Johnson - 4 receptions, 36 yards, 9.0 ypc Defense:Dennis Christopher - 9 tackles (2 TFL), sack Isaiah Cook - 6 tackles (TFL) Brandon Hughes - 6 tackles Kicking:Justin Kahut - 2/2 FG, 1/1 XP, 7 points Kick Returns:Chris Johnson - 3 returns, 62 yards, 20.6 avg Punt Returns:Chris Johnson - 2 returns, 16 yards, 8.0 avg WASHINGTON STATISTICAL LEADERSPassing:Jake Locker - 26/42, 257 yards, 2 TD, 2 INT Rushing:Jake Locker - 17 carries, 95 yards, 5.6 ypc, TD Chris Polk - 16 carries, 67 yards, 4.2 ypc Recieving:D'Andre Goodwin - 11 receptions, 131 yards, 11.9 ypc Chris Polk - 2 receptions, 35 yards, 17.5 ypc Defense:Donald Butler - 5 tackles (2 TFL), sack Nate Williams - 5 tackles (2 TFL), sack Chris Stevens - 5 tackles, INT Kicking:Ryan Perkins - 1/1 FG, 3/3 XP, 6 points Kick Returns:Jordan Polk - 3 returns, 63 yards, 21.0 avg Punt Returns:Jordan Polk - 1 returns, 10 yards, 10.0 avg

(4-2) Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Washington Huskies (1-5) HUSKY STADIUM - SEATTLE, WASHINGTON OCTOBER 25TH, 2009 Wet N' WildDefenses dominate game
By CHET HAMLIN Seattle Post-Intelligencer Husky Beat Writer 10/26/2008
Seattle - Seattle is known as one of the nation's rainiest cities, and it didn't disappoint in that regard last night. Two-and-a-half inches fell on Friday night before the game, and it rained throughout the game. It showed in the statistics, as Notre Dame barely edged out over 300 yards in total offense, and Washington racked up just 265 yards in all.
On the game's first play, freshman halfback Chris Polk was nicked up with a stinger, and missed the rest of the game. Brandon Johnson, who started six games as a true freshman last season, racked up a nice game, with 119 yards on twenty-two carries, including a 30-yard run in the third quarter. Jake Locker had his lowest rushing output so far, with just forty-three yards on eleven carries.
Head coach T.B. Miz noted that Polk would be fine, and not miss any time beyond this game.
"He's a little sore, but he'll be fine for next week's game," said Miz. "If there's a position we're deep at, it's runningback. Brandon (Johnson) came through for us with a nice performance despite the loss."
Locker passed for just seventy-six yards and one interception, his worst game passing by far on the year. He said that while not making any excuses, the ball was slippery, and he did throw some passes that were questionable-looking when they came out of his throwing hand.
"I had the ball slip on me a few times," said Locker. "Unfortunately, one of them turned into a turnover. But I can't dwell on that - we've got to get better on offense, and fast."
Cameron Elisara set a new career-high in sacks, with three. He also had ten tackles in all, with seven of those going for losses.Final Score: NOTRE DAME - 13 WASHINGTON - 6NOTRE DAME STATISTICAL LEADERSPassing:Jimmy Clausen - 18/31, 214 yards, TD, INT Rushing:James Aldridge - 12 carries, 83 yards, 6.9 ypc Asaph Schwapp - 6 carries, 34 yards, 5.6 ypc Receiving:James Aldridge - 2 receptions, 60 yards, 30.0 ypc Duval Kamara - 4 receptions, 47 yards, 11.8 ypc, TD Defense:J. (1-6) Washington Huskies at #6 Southern Cal Trojans (6-1) THE COLISEUM - LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA NOVEMBER 1ST, 2008 California Dreamin'Trojans roll outmatched Huskies
By CHET HAMLIN Seattle Post-Intelligencer Husky Beat Writer 11/2/2008
Los Angeles - Thanks to a whale of an effort by Chris Stevens, Washington was able to stick with the sixth-ranked Trojans throughout the first half, down only 14-0 at the intermission. Stevens had seven tackles and three sacks in the first half, seemingly defeating his blocker every time to get to the ball carrier. He made several key sacks and tackles on third down plays, holding the Trojans to just two touchdowns, four punts and a missed field goal in the first half.
But the end result was not favorable. Washington pulled to within eleven, 14-3, with a Ryan Perkins field goal on the Huskies' opening drive of the second half. But Pete Carroll had enough. He pulled his offense aside, and told them what was on the line.
"We were way too sluggish in the first half and then some," said Carroll. "We overlooked them in the first half, and they stuck with us...but I pulled my starters aside, and told them what we have to play for, there's a lot of season left, and we can't overlook anyone."
To make matters worse, two key contributors went down with injuries for Washington, including the starting quarterback. Jake Locker left the game with a concussion, and he's listed as questionable for next week's game. Redshirt freshman cornerback Quinton Richardson, who has started all eight games so far, will miss the next two or three weeks with a hip contusion.
"I talked to Jake this morning, and he's still a bit woozy," said head coach T.B. Miz. "But I talked to him just a bit ago, and he says that he's coming around some, so that's encouraging...as far as Quinton (Richardson) goes, he's going to miss a few games...contusions are really painful injuries, and it's hard to do much of anything in terms of staying in game shape when coming back from those."
Ronnie Fouch, a redshirt freshman, replaced Locker. It was pretty clear early on that he was rattled. On his first play, he was leveled by Kyle Moore dropping back for a pass. After that, he completed just 7-of-18 passes for fifty yards, and threw four interceptions, three of them leading to Trojan touchdowns.
Another aspect that hurt Washington was the option game was out for them with Locker missing.
"Jake brings us an aspect at quarterback that Ronnie and our other guys don't have, which is mobility and speed," said Miz. "They're capable runners, not putting them down, but Jake is at another level."
It doesn't get any easier as the Huskies travel to Tempe to face the eighth-ranked and Pac-10 leading Arizona State Sun Devils. Kickoff from Sun Devil Stadium will take place at 8 P.M., and will be shown regionally on ABC.Final Score: WASHINGTON - 3 SOUTHERN CAL - 42WASHINGTON STATISTICAL LEADERSPassing:Ronnie Fouch - 7/18, 50 yards, 4 INT Jake Locker - 7/13, 38 yards Rushing:Chris Polk - 15 carries, 45 yards, 3.0 ypc Jake Locker - 6 carries, 27 yards, 4.5 ypc Recieving:Alvin Logan - 5 receptions, 37 yards, 7.4 ypc D'Andre Goodwin - 5 receptions, 17 yards, 3.4 ypc Defense:Chris Stevens - 13 tackles (9 TFL), 4 sacks Mason Foster - 5 tackles, INT Donald Butler - 4 tackles Kicking:Ryan Perkins - 1/1 FG, 3 points Kick Returns:Jordan Polk - 5 returns, 94 yards, 18.8 avg Punt Returns:Jordan Polk - 3 return, 10 yards, 3.3 avg SOUTHERN CAL STATISTICAL LEADERSPassing:Mark Sanchez - 23/39, 307 yards, 3 TD, INT Rushing:C.J. (7-1) #8 Arizona State Sun Devils at Washington Huskies (1-7) HUSKY STADIUM - SEATTLE, WASHINGTON NOVEMBER 8TH, 2008 What the Devil!?Huskies drop fifth straight contest
By CHET HAMLIN Seattle Post-Intelligencer Husky Beat Writer 11/9/2008
Seattle - It was one of the oddest games in recent memory, as Arizona State recorded not one, but two safeties on Washington in the same quarter, and went for two late in the game, up twelve with six minutes to go in regulation. "It certainly wasn't the most aesthetically pleasing game I've had the pleasure of witnessing, but it was a win," said Arizona State head coach and long-time Washington nemesis Dennis Erickson.
The Huskies actually held a 10-7 lead against the eighth-ranked Sun Devils in the second quarter, who remain in sole possession of the Pac-10 race with a perfect 6-0 mark, and 8-1 overall. Their only loss continues to be at the hands of Georgia at home back in Week 3, and they beat fifth-ranked Southern Cal in Los Angeles by ten back in Week 7. Arizona State then went on an 18-0 run to take a 25-10 lead before Jake Locker's five-yard touchdown run cut the lead to 25-16 after the two-point try failed.
Ryan Perkins added a 44-yard field goal to cut the lead to six early in the fourth, but that's as close as they would get. Rudy Carpenter tossed the fourth of his four touchdown passes, this one to Chris McGaha, and the two-point try was successful, giving the Sun Devils a 33-19 lead, which ended up being the final score.
"We needed a win to keep the train going," said Carpenter, a fifth-year senior. "Washington provided a pretty tough test for us, we knew they were better than their record indicated, so they had our attention all week in practice."
Now 1-8 on the season, and next-to-last in the Pac-10, head coach T.B. Miz and the rest of the Huskies will now turn their attention to UCLA, coming off of a 30-14 loss at home to Oregon State last week.
"They're a solid bunch...they've had some quarterback problems, but they've been able to piece together a pretty nice season so far," said Miz. "We get them at home, so that's a plus. But we've got to win some games, we just have to."
Kickoff will be on Fox Sports Northwest at 8 P.M. Pacific.

(5-4) UCLA Bruins at Washington Huskies (1-8) HUSKY STADIUM - SEATTLE, WASHINGTON NOVEMBER 15TH, 2008 Bruin BruisersSixteen seniors say good-bye on Senior Day
By CHET HAMLIN Seattle Post-Intelligencer Husky Beat Writer 11/16/2008
Seattle - Before Washington's thrilling 31-28 win over UCLA last night, sixteen Washington seniors walked onto the playing surface at Husky Stadium for the last time, and were greeted by athletic director Scott Woodward, and head coach T.B. Miz, and presented with plaques. Miz had good things to say about the class despite not knowing them for very long.
"I haven't been here that long, but there was a dedication from this class that I was impressed with throughout the summer and into the fall," said Miz after the game. "It's going to be tough to see them go. They've provided a good example for the underclassmen, and I'm grateful for that."
As for the game, the Huskies held a 31-14 lead with a quarter to go. Two Pat Cowan touchdown passes brought the Bruins back from seventeen down to pull to within three, 31-28. But on UCLA's last-gasp attempt at a complete comeback, Cowan was picked off for the second time by senior Desmond Davis, his first career interception, to seal the game. Davis tossed the ball over to the sideline, where they gave it to his family to keep.
"I'll treasure that forever," said Davis of the game-winning play. "Our record isn't very indicative, but we're a pretty close-knit group of guys. I'm honored to have played here for four seasons."
"It's a huge win for the program," Miz proclaimed. "UCLA's a solid program that's pretty high up in the Pac-10 standings...it's a very significant win moving forward here."
The win marks the second time a Washington team has held a big lead in the fourth quarter, only to see it whittled down to nearly nothing before pulling out the victory. The earlier win over Stanford was exactly the same way - the Huskies held a 31-14 going into the fourth quarter, before a pair of touchdowns from Tavita Pritchard brought the Cardinal back to within a field goal, but a Stanford turnover on their next drive sealed the game.
In fact, Washington has held the lead going into the fourth quarter in seven of their ten games - going 2-5 in those contests.
"I hadn't heard that before," said Miz when told of the statistic. "We've got to get better at closing games, but that's what you get with a young team...you have to learn how to close out close games, and win. We're getting there."Final Score: UCLA - 28 WASHINGTON - 31UCLA STATISTICAL LEADERSPassing:Pat Cowan - 23/38, 293 yards, 3 TD, 2 INT Rushing:Kahlil Bell - 13 carries, 94 yards, 7.2 ypc, TD Pat Cowan - 6 carries, 12 yards, 2.0 ypc Receiving:N. (2-8) Washington Huskies at #19 Washington State Cougars (9-1) MARTIN STADIUM - PULLMAN, WASHINGTON APPLE CUP TROPHY NOVEMBER 22ND, 2008 Exposed!Huskies score 24 first-quarter points
By CHET HAMLIN Seattle Post-Intelligencer Husky Beat Writer 11/23/2008
Pullman - The view from the sidelines at Martin Stadium was priceless - the crowd was very loud at the start of the game, and continued through Washington's first drive, which ended in a three-and-out. But nineteenth-ranked Washington State's quarterback Gary Rogers, who has made a miraculous recovery from a back injury earlier this season, threw an interception on his first pass in his first start since the injury. Washington moved down the field before Jermaine Kearse caught a three-yard touchdown from Jake Locker, which tempered the crowd a bit.
Two plays into the next drive for the Cougars, Rogers threw another interception. Several plays later, washington scored again when Kavario Middleton snared a forty-seven yard touchdown from Locker, putting the Huskies up 14-0. Again, this tempered the crowd's enthusiasm a bit more. But when Rogers stepped on the field for the next possession, he was intercepted yet again, this time by Mason Foster off of a tipped pass.
Down 14-0 and with three turnovers, the Washington State offense walked off the field to a smattering of boos.
"It was hard to watch," said first-year head coach Paul Wulff, who is up for many coaching post-season honors this season. "Everyone was fired up, ready to play, but sometimes, the ball just doesn't bounce the way you want it to."
Washington capitalized on the turnover with a field goal, putting the Huskies up 17-0 with barely half of the first quarter gone. After a couple of three-and-outs by the Cougars, the Huskies scored yet again, this time on a Locker three-yard run late in the frame, giving the Huskies a 24-0 lead with just twenty-two seconds to go in the FIRST quarter. By this time, you could hear a pin drop in the house.
In fact, Washington State didn't score until the waning minutes of the first half, when Rogers connected with Dwight Tardy for an eleven yard touchdown to cut the lead to 17, 24-7. But Washington came out after halftime, scoring fourteen more points in the third and early fourth quarters to take a 38-7 lead.
Washington State would add ten points in the final frame, but by then, most fans had left the building.
"A very disappointing loss all the way around," said Wulff. "I don't know what it was, if it was coaching, players, but I do know that it was a total team effort. Whether you win or lose, it's not because of one player...it's the entire team." Washington State needed to win to keep up with Southern Cal in the Pac-10, but with the loss, it's all but assured that either Arizona State or the Trojans take the Pac-10 title.Final Score: WASHINGTON - 38 #19 WASHINGTON STATE - 17WASHINGTON STATISTICAL LEADERSPassing:Jake Locker - 15/28, 156 yards, 3 TD, INT Rushing:Chris Polk - 9 carries, 39 yards, 4.3 ypc Jake Locker - 14 carries, 32 yards, 2.3 ypc Receiving:Kavario Middleton - 3 receptions, 109 yards, 36.3 ypc, TD Chris Polk - 1 reception, 20 yards Defense:Mason Foster - 7 tackles, 2 INT, FF Chris Stevens - 5 tackles Joshua Gage - 4 tackles, INT Kicking:Ryan Perkins - 1/1 FG, 5/5 XP, 8 points Kick Returns:Quinton Richardson - 2 returns, 49 yards, 24.5 avg Punt Returns:Jordan Polk - 3 returns, 45 yards, 15.0 avg WASHINGTON STATE STATISTICAL LEADERSPassing:Gary Rogers - 20/36, 177 yards, 2 TD, 5 INT Rushing:Dwight Tardy - 14 carries, 76 yards, 5.4 ypc Chris Ivory - 2 carries, 15 yards, 7.5 ypc Receiving:Jeshua Anderson - 3 receptions, 65 yards, 21.6 ypc, TD Brandon Gibson - 7 receptions, 64 yards, 9.1 ypc Defense:Andy Mattingly - 7 tackles (6 TFL), 2 sacks, 2 FF Kendrick Dunn - 6 tackles (2 TFL) Corey Evans - 5 tackles Kicking:Reid Forrest - 1/1 FG, 2/2 XP, 5 points Kick Returns:Brandon Gibson - 6 returns, 122 yards, 20.3 avg Punt Returns:Brandon Gibson - 3 returns, 1 yard, 0.3 avg
