This is possibly the most ridiculous point I've ever seen argued on this site, athlete's do not possess the most dangerous jobs, it is an utter joke that you are arguing elsewise. Yeah, I definately wasn't arguing that they had the most dangerous job anymore. I was arguing that you are both trying to put words in my mouth, and also not paying full attention to the dangers athletes face on the field. I conceded the point that they didn't have the most dangerous job, figured a bright guy like you would've picked up on that..

And at the grade fixing..
That rarely happens. Sure, it will happen from time to time, and doesn't surprise when it does. So, are we going to discount the GPA's of others due to the less than 1% of jocks who have their grades fixed? It's been studied by psychologists and others that playing sports helps increase the grades of student-athletes because the threat of losing their eligibility pushes them to try harder and motivates them to improve their grades. Granted, they don't always take the hardest classes, but is an A not still an A, regardless of class?
Before you try to make the comparison to whether an A in an honors class is comparable to an A in a regular class, don't. Because I know they aren't. But the facts still say that the GPA of student-athletes is higher than non-student-athletes.

Every student is under pressure to do well in school.

Every student is obviouslly under pressure to do well, but moreso for student athletes becuase if they don't do well they lose their eligibility..

I would consider myself a jock, but for someone who is a 3 sport varsity athlete as a sophomore, I'd say that I lack confidence. Keeper's right when he talks about kids being school smart but not real smart. A lot of my friends from sports are borderline retarded but still manage to get high 80s. Our hockey locker room conversations generally dont go away from handjobs, arizonas, partying, and big hits at any point in time. I don't think athletes have hard jobs, but it is physically draining. You can get beat up pretty bad, but probably 90% of people would choose to be athletes, so I don't think it should be labeled as a very dangerous job. I dont think grade fixing happens much either. Maybe I'm wrong, but I"d like to think it doesn't happen much. Oh, and uh, F asterik in your face Keeper.

Yes, it's physically draining, but on a danger level, there is no comparison.

But the facts still say that the GPA of student-athletes is higher than non-student-athletes. Show me the studies. I understand that needing to stay eligible is a push, but I cannot believe there is any significant difference in academic performance because you have the same cross-section of people that are athletes and those that are not. Oh and maybe your school was different. I saw it happen, a lot. It was for certain students, you know the good athletes who sucked in school, but don't be naive and think it doesn't happen a lot more than you let on. On top of that, the recruiting that went on at my HS in Mobile would blow your mind. If the AHSAA would actually look into it, they would flip shit. Athletes got speical treatment at my school, and of course didn't actually have to pay tuition to go there. That is where some of my dislike for the jock type comes from. I'm not a jock hater, hell my best friend was a three year starter on the football team. Just you know, wasn't a huge fan of how things worked at my school.

I'll get on finding the study when I get home from school Bama, but our experiences may have been different because you went to a private HS for the majority of your time in high school.

It's the schools choice for paying the kids way. Not them.
Keeper, why is it so hard for you to get what Buck is saying? Quit putting words into his mouth and say he is dreaming.
I also don't get why you just can't conisder football to be dangerous? I've seen a kid die on the football field.... how is something that you could lose your life with not dangerous?
Sportsbuck never denied grade fixing but it seems people like to think that he did.
TJ, the hand job talk, big hit talk, THAT'S WHAT GUYS TALK ABOUT! That doesn't mean they're borderline retarded. Hell, we talk about that stuff on DC half the time. If you don't talk about that stuff with guy friends, you're either gay, very insecure, or haven't had it happen to you.

I saw it early this morning and like you said the post was scattered so I didn't really comprehend it. Bama, if it is illegal, how come schools like Detroit Country Day get players who come from the ghetto to play basketball and not get in trouble? Country Day's tuition is up in the ten's of thousands. There is no way some of their basketball players can pay that kind of money. It's not illegal.

I think what is being missed about the grade fixing is quite simple. Like is has been mentioned, you can become seriously injured while playing the sport. So let's say you had your grades fixed but now you can't walk. So instead of just being disabled, you are also dumb as shit. Your life has become that much harder. Honestly, you may have been a great player or what not, but you won't get very far without a basic high school education.

I didn't see anything in the read but wondered if you could answer this question quick. Are mentally challenged and English second language students grouped in with non-athletes? The reason I ask is from when I was in high school and state test scores were being figured. Mentally challenged and English second language students were included and it was felt they may have swayed results due to them being at a disadvantage.

I'd almost guarentee they are, it's consistant with what I've found when I'm stumbling around statistics. The idea that athlete's are under some greater pressure that makes them perform better is a false notion, as all students face outside pressures from different things.
