How did Lloyd Carr win the Bobby Dodd Coach of the year award?

because he's a legendary coach who is leaving the game and one of the biggest football programs in D1.....
or because the award people are UM alumni

Coach of the Year, not Coach of the Year Who's Getting Fired.
I'd take Leavitt over him, hell, maybe even Schnellenberger.

Retiring. If he hadn't retired he'd still be coaching at UM, they don't have the balls to fire the guy after all he's done for them (Which really isn't much).
As much as it pains me to say this, and it really, really does, Zook deserved consideration.

I think June Jones, Mark Mangino, and Ron Zook should be the only three to be considered this year. Schellenberger (sp?) could be a possible candidate, but Carr winning was more about honoring the way he coached the University. The press release talked about his graduating rate, integrity, blah blah blah

When I saw the title of this thread, I thought it was a joke topic dissing UM...

I'll actually take the contrarian view here and say he just may have deserved this award. After his team suffered two humiliating losses to start the year, what do they do. They go on an eight game winning streak and get themselves into a New Year's Day Bowl. They beat Illinois, something that team from down south couldn't get done, and all in all turned into a pretty good team despite injuries.
Now I think Mangino deserves it more than anyone, I'm not that upset that Carr would win this award. Keeping the wheels on that team after losing to Appy State and getting demoralized by Oregon was impressive IMO.

Impressive yes, but the fact still remains, that he lost those first two. You can look at it both ways I suppose.

(Although I don't have much room to talk) And if you are going to pick somebody that coached a team that beat Illinois I'd say Gary Pinkel from Mizzou deserves it WAY more than Carr. How about Tressel if we're throwing out candiates? Led his team to a 2nd straight NC appearance, and went 11-1 after losing a Heisman Winner, two first round picks at receiver, and a starting running back.

Sportsbuck, my main point is that he held that team together when it would have been easy to mail the rest of the season in after the Oregon debacle. They're humiliated, demoralized, and playing like shit going into the Notre Dame game. They go out and make a statement by trashing Notre Dame (not impressive I realize, but would have been easy for both teams to play like ass) and Michigan started playing like I expected. Going through that much turmoil and getting Michigan to the Citrus Bowl, that's a hell of a season.
FWIW, I would have been satisfied with either Pinkel, Mangino, Zook, or Tressel (he's done a hell of a job this year).

The award isn't just about football. It has a lot to do with classroom performance and community stuff.

Most of Michigan's players have degrees in General Studies so I don't think their classroom performances are that impressive.

That's kind of funny. 1/4 of their football team is majoring in general studies, and only one junior on their team has a declared major. I'd look up the numbers for tOSU, but I know that they are in our favor in that regard.
